This Time, Be the Villain’s Favorite Daughter

Chapter 414 One Fatal Blow

His gaze settled on Maya’s face and held there, unmoving.

Finished

“After trading blows with a man like that, Maya, how did you walk away without a scratch? He didn’t so much as wound you.”

Maya’s head was pounding. “…Can’t it just be because I’m actually really good?”

Edric paid no mind to her feeble excuse.

Smart people like him all shared one trait: once they sank into a chain of logic, they liked to talk to themselves, tuning out everyone else entirely.

“Snowfinch’s hideout was a kickboxing gym.

“And as it happens, the daughter of that gym’s owner is a classmate of yours. The two of you are in the same class.

“Have you two ever had a conflict?

“Or put it this way-did you ever act strangely around her?

“In my opinion, if you’ve been in the same class for long enough, even if you aren’t actually close, you’re bound to bring up your classmates to your family every now and then.”

Arrabella-Maya had mentioned her at the dinner table before; the two of them weren’t on especially good terms.

“All Arrabella had to do was say a few words to Snowfinch about the friction between you girls, and given how fiercely protective he was, it was only a matter of time before he set his sights on you.

“Or maybe Snowfinch took it into his head to pick Arrabella up from school one day, and there was a very good chance you’d have run into him too.

“An assassin-a true elite-can read your hidden background purely from your body language and subconscious habits.”

Edric’s gaze dipped, ever so slightly.

Someone who knew the trade could figure out another person’s identity after testing them once or twice- after all, so many instinctive movements simply can’t be faked.

“Snowfinch knew Mom. The two of them had a score to settle. And did you know? Alfred, grown up. actually looks a lot like Mom did when she was young.”

He spoke very slowly, enunciating every word with deliberate clarity.

In other words, all it would take was for the two of them to be spotted by Snowfinch.

Neither she nor Alfred would have ended well.

Edric’s guess was that the two of them must have run into Snowfinch.

And that one of them had died.

Flushed

“This is only a guess, Maya, but it’s one hell of a coincidence…” Edric drew out a long sigh. “So many coincidences. That the place Snowfinch worked just happened to be at your classmate’s home, and that you and Arrabella just happened to be classmates.

“Coincidences like these always leave me feeling that everyone’s on a single chessboard, set out in advance by fate.”

Edric finished talking to himself and met Maya’s already glazed-over eyes.

He’d guessed the whole sequence of events.

Maya nearly dropped to her knees before him.

“Now, I’ve got only one question left. I don’t believe you could just happen to save someone every single time, and without having to pay any price at all.”

Edric’s voice, so flat this whole time, finally carried a faint, hard-to-detect note of bitterness and fear.

“Maya, what on earth did you give, and what did you trade it for?”

Maya had no words.

Silence spread between the two of them.

“I didn’t trade anything,” Maya said, curling back in on herself. “It’s just that, as a penalty, I might end up in some other timeline. The penalty really isn’t much so stop looking at me like that.”

The girl wrapped her arms tightly around herself without meaning to, a textbook instinctive defense she’d carried since childhood.

Edric had no intention of forcing it out of her. He only wanted to confirm one thing-that she was safe.

He let out a soft ‘oh,’ then gently countered, “Is it really not much, Maya?”

The timid boy Edric had once been was gone. As an adult, the quality that stood out most was his

composure.

He could always hide his emotions weil, and there was a slow, unhurried pressure to the way he spoke.

“So let’s come back to the earlier question.

“Snowfinch,” Edric said slowly. “You killed him.”

Just hearing him open his mouth now made Maya’s scalp prickle.

Here it came again-that tone of his, bent on picking every last thread loose.

She tipped her head back and couldn’t help babbling, trying to cut off his deduction. “So what?
