“I really don’t want to play golf anymore. Can we please switch subjects? How about music appreciation? To be completely honest with you, I’m actually a musical genius.”
Philbert narrowed his eyes. “You? Musical talent?”
Maya nodded furiously.
The afternoon music appreciation class was supposed to be taught by a hired instructor.
But convinced his granddaughter didn’t possess a single musical bone in her body, Philbert dismissed th
teacher and decided to test her himself.
He put on a vinyl record–Hubermann’s Nocturnes.
The delicate aroma of sandalwood drifted through the living room. Beyond the floor–to–ceiling windows, the manicured garden lay bathed in soft sunlight filtering through the sliding screen doors. Everything was serene, peaceful, and utterly tranquil.
So tranquil, in fact, that Maya’s eyelids grew heavy, her head nodding lower and lower until-
Philbert silently cranked the volume knob to maximum, and Maya snapped upright with a violent shudder.
“Well? What did you gather from that?” her grandfather asked coolly.
“Uh…” Maya’s brain scrambled for an answer. “It’s… great for insomnia?”
After all, it had knocked her right out.
“…Ignorant. How can you be so utterly ignorant?” He didn’t even have the energy left to be disappointed- only a profound, soul–crushing weariness remained. “Hubermann’s work here relies heavily on improvisation. Beneath the restraint lies a swelling surge of emotion, the feeling building richer and richer. Listen to this passage again…”
He stepped over to the turntable and reset the needle to the beginning of that passage.
And this time, history repeated itself.
Maya nearly drifted straight back to sleep.
Silence descended upon them
This mutually torturous routine with the terrifying old patriarch lasted about four days.
Finally, on the nfth day, Maya completely snapped.
She slammed hess piece onto the board, threw her hands up, and leaned back in her chair.

Chapter 418 Back to School
Old–school discipline had won.
Maya had fallen.
She couldn’t take another second of staying at home.
Baffled by her sudden outburst, Philbert aid coldly, “What kind of madness is this now?”
Maya retorted, “I’m not going mad.”
Maya bit her lip and chose her words carefully. “Grandpa, all you ever do is crush my spirit.”
Not to mention cramming her schedule with a million useless classes.

“And you call me stupid every five minutes,” she added, attempting to hold the high moral ground.
Hearing this, Philbert bent down to pick up a fallen black piece. “Actually, you aren’t altogether hopeless.”
Maya waited for the rest of the sentence.
“Maya,” the old man said, meticulously sorting the black and white pieces on the board, his tone unusually earnest, “you aren’t the only tough nut to crack under this roof.
“Your brothers were just as stubborn.”
Truth be told, Philbert had never understood the first thing about parenting; every child who fell into his hands came out damaged.
First Raymond, then Edric, and finally Toby.
Yet he retained a bizarre, unwavering confidence in his “break ‘em down” approach to parenting.
To this day, he genuinely believed his grandchildren had only turned out so remarkable because of his merciless discipline.
Maya shook her head violently. “My mind is made up. I’m going back to class tomorrow.
“You can keep those extra lessons for yourself. Bye.”
She bolted up the stairs, her grandfather’s muffled voice trailing after her from the floor below. “There’s a fencing lesson scheduled for tomorrow morning.”
Maya didn’t even hesitate. “Not going!”
“I hired an Olympic gold medalist to teach you.”
I wouldn’t go if God Himself came down to teach me!”
…You Lutle brat
Alter a full week of playing hooky, Maya grabbed her backpack and set off for school once again, alone
