Chapter 423 Friends on the Dark Side
What was Harmony International Schoulike before?
It had been ruled by social climbing and powerful connections.
Students competed over whose family ranked higher on the rich list.
Firusted
Teachers fawned over students from powerful families and barely acknowledged those from ordinary homes.
It was less of a school but a place where the children of the rich and powerful could start building connections early.
But everything had changed in recent years.
The school had finally started focusing on academics.
The teachers had started genuinely teaching and mentoring their students.
The status games and social exclusion still went on behind closed doors, but at least people had toned them down considerably in public.
Jenny liked how normal the school had become.
But she wasn’t naive.
Changes like that didn’t happen on their own.
For Harmony to have changed this much, either the management team had been replaced or someone higher up had ordered a major overhaul.
Maya’s identity wasn’t a secret.
If even Jonathan had figured it out, Harmony’s administrators must’ve known exactly who Maya was.
The moment that thought crossed her mind, a chill ran down Jenny’s spine.
A family like the Clarks had no shortage of enemies.
If government agencies or underworld organizations really had their sights set on Maya, she was in far more danger at Harmony than she let on.
Phoebe had reached the saine conclusion and, always alert to danger, warned Maya, “You shouldn’t come to school for a while. If you really want to know what Jonathan and the others are doing, we’ll keep an eye on them for you.”
“I’ll help too,” Iris quickly offered. “Our boss is investigating the Asterio organization too. If we need to take them down, we can join forces with Wisteria again!” Since starting school, she’d really missed the days when she, Maya, and Wisteria killed people and set things on fire together.
The three girls talked back and forth while Somalie stood to the side, wide–eyed and speechless.

Chapter 423 friends on the Dark Side
“Hey, guys, doesn’t it sound like we’re the villains in this story?”
Fin.died
They really did sound like a group of villains plotting something terrible in a restroom.
“With a family like yours, you still want to be one of the good guys, princess?” Phoebe asked in surprise.
Phoebe and Jenny came from families that were mostly on the right side of the law, but even Phoebe knew her family’s business had its gray areas.
Jenny also knew that some of her father’s business dealings weren’t exactly clean.
Given Somalie’s underworld background, her family had probably made just as many enemies as the Clarks.
If Maya had a target on her back, Somalie wasn’t much better off; they were simply different kinds of
targets.
Somalie gave a lazy shrug before saying, “I know, but things usually end badly for people like us in movies and TV shows.
“Jonathan, Kaia, and the others sound like such wonderful people.”
“Oh, they’re wonderful, all right.” The thought of Kaia and the others irritated Phoebe. “If she’s so righteous, why didn’t she ever stand up for anyone else before?”
So much for her sense of justice.
Maya leaned against the sink and listened as her friends talked, feeling oddly touched. “I thought you’d all want to stay away from me.”
Somalie let out a soft “Wow” before continuing.
“How could we? Everyone here does business with your family in one way or another. Every underworld group has to answer to your family sooner or later. If something happened to the Clarks, how would all the groups that rely on you survive? Of course we’re going to help you.”
As she spoke, her tone softened, shifting from businesslike to personal.
She clung to Maya’s arm and leaned against her, her golden–brown curls brushing Maya’s shoulder. ‘Besides, we’re good friends.”
