Chapter 422 Enemies in the Shadows
But what exactly is Keia planning to do with those people?
That was the question Maya truly wanted answered.
She wasn’t afraid of Kaia herself; what scared her was what the powerful people backing Kaia were planning.
Jenny swallowed nervously.
Finished
“Maya, you scared me when you suddenly attacked her. Haven’t you noticed that everyone in class is keeping their distance from us now?”
“Yeah, I noticed,” Maya said.
At some point, the students sitting around them had quietly moved their desks and chairs about a foot and a half farther away.
Some of them didn’t even dare look in their direction.
The bolder ones would sneak a glance at them, then quickly look away the moment they realized Maya had caught them looking.
They looked at Maya and her friends with a mix of fear, curiosity, unease, and awe.
Maya could tell Jenny was pretty scared too.
She’s this afraid of my family, yet she’s stayed friends with me all these years. That couldn’t have been easy.
Jenny stood up and sat back down several times before finally taking a deep breath.
“Maya, I actually figured out what your family really does a while ago.”
Jenny’s parents had taught her from an early age to stay out of trouble and look out for herself.
Befriending someone dangerous wasn’t a smart choice unless that person had something valuable to offer.
Is the upside of being friends with Maya that I won’t have to live in fear of being killed someday?
Now that’s one hell of a perk.
After letting her thoughts spiral for a few seconds, Jenny’s loyalty to Maya won out. “You look really worried.”
“A little,” Maya admitted, covering her face. “Is it that obvious?”
“I’ve known all your tells since we were kids.” Jenny looked pleased with herself.
Maya let out a frustrated groan. “So what exactly is Kaia up to? I’ve never really paid much attention to
her.”

Now that Maya thought about it, Kaia clearly wasn’t someone to be underestimated.
“Can’t you just ask your family to kill her?”
Finished
Maya rested her chin on her hand. “She’s got powerful backers too, and they’re not exactly nobodies.”
Besides, Maya genuinely believed the heroine’s plot armor was too mysterious for any ordinary person to
overcome.
Jenny cursed under her breath.
Somalie had no idea what was going on. “Maya, was that some kind of action movie scene you two were acting out back there?”
“An action movie? We’re talking about something serious, princess.” Jenny rolled her eyes.
“Let’s not talk here.” Phoebe glanced at the rest of the class, who had gone completely silent, tapped the table lightly, and said, “Let’s go to the restroom.”
Somalie blurted, “Are you crazy? You want to talk in the restroom?”
“Come on, let’s go.” Phoebe pushed the whole group toward the classroom door, surprisingly insistent. “The restrooms here are really clean, so unless you’d all rather talk in the lounge, I don’t see the problem. But it’s always packed in there, and someone could easily overhear us, so the restroom is still the better option.”
On the way, Iris kept asking, “Is the Banshee really your mom?”
Does that mean I really got to meet my idol in person back then?
Maya took her hand and nodded. “Yeah, and my mom likes you a lot.”
Iris blushed instantly. “Really?”
When Maya nodded, Iris let out a silent scream and nearly fainted with excitement.
Mom, I can die happy now!
Vincent had been eavesdropping nearby for quite a while before edging closer to the group.
When the girls all turned to look at him, the boy rubbed his hands together like a cartoon villain, barely able to contain his excitement.
“Ladies, can I join your restroom tea party?”
The government, the underworld, and even the Silent Archive are involved, so how could this not be the most exciting thing ever?
This stuff was more thrilling than every game he had ever played. He wanted in too.
