YOU ARE TOO NAIVE FOR THIS WORLD
The way Xaden said it sent chill down her spine. Fenja blinked her eyes in confusion.
“What do you mean with that? What will happen in this pack?” Fenja grabbed Xaden’s arm out of instinct. “Tell me what is it? What are you going to do?”
But, Xaden didn’t answer her, which made Fenja grow frustrated with him.
“Please, tell me, what is it? Why don’t you want to tell me?” Fenja shook his arm, as if by doing so, she could urge the answer out of his mouth.
But of course, that was a futile attempt. Xaden didn’t say anything, but instead he pressed his forehead. against hers.
“I care about you, Fenja.” Xaden closed his eyes, he gave in to his feeling and let it pour out from his lips. “I tried not to, but it doesn’t help. I care about you, even though I don’t want it.”
“Why you don’t want it?” Fenja’s question turned into a whisper, as she closed her eyes. The pain returned, but along with it, came relief because Xaden finally spoke, that he finally told her what was going on between them and why he treated her that way. “Do you hate me?”
“No…” He moved slightly away, but his hand cupped her cheek and Fenja opened her eyes to look at him. “Then tell me why did you try so hard to avoid me? You detach yourself from me and you know how hurtful it is.” Fenja looked at him, pleading with her eyes. She was afraid if she said something wrong, Xaden would pull away from her again. He would close himself and she wouldn’t be able to reach him anymore. “Tell me, please. Make me understand.”
For a long moment, Xaden said nothing. There was a war behind his dark eyes.
“Because you will get hurt if I care for you.”
“I am in pain right now, Xaden. What else can hurt me aside from being abandoned by your own mate?” Fenja couldn’t accept the answer. “My wolf spirit is dying. I am dying because you refuse the bond. You are killing
me.”
Xaden flinched when he heard the last words and it seemed, it finally got to him how he had caused her an immeasurable pain.
“I didn’t mean to.”
“I prefer someone else to hurt me, but please, not you… I used to get hurt by someone else. I can endure it.”
nja cupped Xaden’s hand that touched her cheek. “Please, tell me. I want to know… don’t carry everything on your own. Why can’t you care about me? Why don’t you let yourself to care about me?”
Xaden pressed his lips. He wanted to retract his hand from touching Fenja, but she held onto him. She could feel how he struggled to avoid her again.
“Fenja, I will arrange the…”
“I will not leave until you explain to me what is going on.” Fenja let go of his hand, her eyes filled with determination. “You don’t save me, Xaden. At this point, you only put us through hell.”
Xaden flinched again. This was the emotion that Fenja was so desperate to feel from him, he was vulnerable. Whatever happened with him in the palace had shattered him from the inside and Fenja was desperately wanted to reach him.
“You don’t save me, Xaden. Don’t ever think you did all of this to save me.” Fenja pressed her lips tightly, she looked at him hardly.
“This.” Xaden then rolled his sleeve and showed his arm, but there was nothing there. “This is what happened, Fenja.”
Xaden was tired and he agreed with her that he had put the two of them through hell instead. Since they were already in pain and there was no way out from this, Xaden would grant her wish, as there was nothing else he

could do for her.
“Watch this.” Xaden then let out the thought. The murderous thought to kill the king. It was not hard, since the idea had never left his mind, it was always tucked safely at the corner of his head.
And the rune responded violently. It appeared in crimson red like blood on the surface of Xaden’s skin, reminding Fenja of the hot rod that was pressed against Xaden’s back, as a mark for their union.
The pain almost immediately and it became even more painful when the murderous intention was getting
stronger.
“What is this?” Fenja wanted to touch it, but Xaden had retracted his hand and covered it with his sleeve again.
“Black magic.”
Fenja lifted her head and saw the expression of pain on Xaden’s face. “Black magic? But… the practice…”
It went without saying that the practice of black magic had long been forbidden, because it required a life in order to fuel their magic.
