No matter how loud he called her name, she just kept walking, acting like she couldn't hear him at all.
By the time his anger cooled down and he tried to chase after Bonnie, she was already gone. She had packed up her stuff and checked out of the hotel.
Lawrence dashed out to look for her, but there was no sign of Bonnie anywhere. Frustrated and anxious, he went back to grab his car. He figured she must have caught a ride, so he sped back to the city, hoping to catch up with her. But when he checked The Observatory, she wasn’t there. He ended up waiting outside her place instead.
He called her over and over, but she just kept hanging up. Eventually she turned her phone off completely. Lawrence was losing his mind, pacing, trying not to imagine every worst-case scenario. And then, finally, Bonnie showed up.
He’d never seen her like this before. Her snow boots were filthy and wet, her face red from the cold, her wool hat pulled low. She looked exhausted and heartbroken, pausing every few steps to wipe away tears.
She was crying so hard, but just before she walked into her building, she stopped, tipped her head back, and took a few steadying breaths. She forced herself to swallow the tears, pushing them down.
Lawrence sat frozen in his car, suddenly unsure what to do. He didn’t dare go up to her, afraid they’d argue right in front of her building, make a scene for the neighbors to watch, or give their families something to worry about.
He had no idea what he could say that would make her believe him anymore.
He wished she could see that he and Hannah were just friends, like brother and sister. He’d tried to be honest with Hannah, to make things clear.
On their last run down the beginner slope, he told her quietly, “Hannah, I need to go find my girlfriend. From now on, no matter what, I have to put her first... because I want to spend the rest of my life with Candie.”
He didn’t stick around to see if Hannah cried. He scanned his card for the lift and left, never looking back.
Lawrence had replayed that day a thousand times in his mind. If only he hadn’t been so stubborn, if only he’d chased after Bonnie then, would things have turned out different?
