Lawrence noticed Bonnie's wrists were turning red from the cold. Her ears were pink, too, and the wind was only making things worse. He looked at her with real concern. “Let’s talk in the car. You’re not dressed warm enough.”
Bonnie felt drained. She wasn't about to get stuck in a small space with him. Her patience was shot. “If you don’t have anything to say, let me go. If you do, then spit it out. I don’t have time for this, and I don’t want to stand here arguing with you.”
Lawrence pressed his lips together, knowing perfectly well just how stubborn she could be. He took off his suit jacket and tried to put it over her shoulders.
Bonnie didn’t even flinch. She brushed his hand away. The jacket dropped right onto the dirty sidewalk.
Lawrence stared at it on the ground for a long time before finally looking up. “Are you with Aiken now?”
Bonnie gave him a sharp look. “Don’t even think about messing around. His job isn’t something you can just mess with. If you try anything, that’s a crime. Get it?”
Lawrence acted like he hadn’t heard a word. He kept going, refusing to let it go. “So you are together?”
Bonnie held his gaze, taking her time before answering. “Yeah. We’re dating.”
Hearing that hit Lawrence hard. His eyes filled with tears so fast he couldn't hide it. His face twisted with jealousy and hurt.
Bonnie’s heart skipped. Lawrence wasn’t acting like himself anymore.
She took another step back, but he moved closer, his voice shaking. “Can you break it off with him? Candie, please, break up with him.”
Helplessness washed over her. She'd explained herself so many times, but he just never got it. He was cornering her, and she felt herself coming apart at the seams.
“What do you even want from me? Who I date is my choice. It has nothing to do with you. Can't you just leave me alone? Take care of your own life and stop dragging me into this.”
Bonnie looked at him, completely at a loss. “Is it because we dated that you think you own me? You want to have everything both ways, make me your side piece, your secret? Is your precious sister not enough, or are you just bored after three years and fishing for something new?”
Lawrence stepped in, shielding her from the cold breeze. His voice was thick with emotion as he tried to explain. “Don’t put yourself down like that. I never saw you that way, and you know it. That’s not what this is.”
Bonnie blinked in disbelief, finding the whole situation ridiculous. For a second, she just laughed, quiet and low. “So what, you’re saying that after three years you suddenly fell back in love with your ex? That’s why you can’t let go? That’s why you keep showing up and trying to ruin things for me?”
Lawrence wanted to tell her it wasn’t about falling back in love. He wanted to tell her he never stopped, not for a second. But the words wouldn’t come. He just stood there, silent and stubborn as ever.
They stared at each other for what felt like ages before Lawrence finally spoke, a little hesitant. “What if I said yes...”
“Lawrence! Are you out of your mind?” Bonnie cut him off right away. “We broke up more than three years ago. You told me, word for word, that you never loved me. That I was just some pawn you used to get between you and Hannah. You said all that yourself. Don’t tell me I got it wrong.”
