Three Years Later, He Came Back Begging novel Chapter 128

Since Aiken got hurt, Bonnie insisted on driving him home herself. After dropping him off, she caught the bus and made her way back to the faculty housing at The Cabinda School.

Her parents were both on holiday too. It was rare for the whole family to be together, so when they saw Bonnie was just getting over her cold, nobody wanted to bring up old wounds or the past.

The national holiday was quiet and comforting for Bonnie. She met up with Helen for a little shopping spree downtown. She also took Aiken out for that meal she’d been owing him.

There was a day spent hiking with her parents, walking under trees ablaze with autumn leaves. The air was crisp and the whole mountain seemed to glow with shades of red. Through it all, Lawrence stayed away. It looked like he really meant what he’d said and kept his promise not to show up anymore.

When the holiday was drawing to a close, Bonnie went back to her apartment. As she got to her door, her eyes landed on the neighboring unit, 1207, without even thinking about it.

She held the doorknob for a moment, memories crowding in from that day she and Aiken had shared their stories.

Aiken’s story was wild and intense, all danger and high stakes. They were chasing a major fugitive. It wasn’t just Aiken who’d been hurt—one of his teammates took a blow to the head and was still in the hospital.

Thinking of her own life, Bonnie felt her problems seemed so ordinary. Looking back, she wondered if she’d just been overdramatic all along, worrying about things that now felt small.

She’d sat quiet for a long time that day before finally telling Aiken the truth. She and Lawrence? They’d actually broken up at a ski resort three years ago.

Aiken’s face had been a mix of shock and confusion. Usually so quick with words, for once he didn’t know what to say.

Maybe he couldn’t imagine that after three years apart, after each of them had started their own new lives, things could still get tangled up between them.

He didn’t ask for the whole story. He was gentle about it, careful not to push.

Before he left, Aiken glanced at the door next to hers. He asked if her new neighbor had finally moved in, since the keypad lock was brand new.

For the first time, Bonnie didn’t try to hide it. She nodded and said, “It’s Lawrence. But... I don’t think he’ll be coming around anymore.”
