Jasper’s little face had grown thinner, still pale and tired from being sick. He looked like he hadn’t quite found his energy yet.
Hannah wasn’t doing much better.
The woman behind the wheel glanced back, as if she wanted to say something but thought better of it. Hannah caught her eye briefly, then stepped out of the car with Jasper.
Jasper hopped into the puddles, his shoes splashing as he followed his mom under the wide awning of the office building. Even then, he looked longingly at the rain and clearly wanted to go play in it some more.
He looked up and suddenly spotted someone—her face felt almost familiar.
Jasper paused for just a second, then called out, “Pretty lady.”
Bonnie’s eyes passed over Jasper's sickly little face before settling on Hannah.
Hannah offered a small, calm smile. “Bonnie, can we talk?”
She had clearly come here on purpose, right to Bonnie’s work.
Bonnie frowned. “I don’t really see what there is to talk about. If it’s about Lawrence, I’d rather not.”
Bonnie shifted, ready to leave.
But Hannah didn’t look surprised. Instead, she stepped in front of Bonnie, her voice soft but edged with resignation. “It’s crowded here. With everyone getting off work, it’ll be embarrassing if things get heated. I’m just asking for a few words, that’s all.”
