Someone knocked on the door a few times. Through the thick wood, Bonnie could only catch muffled voices, and all she could tell was that it was a woman out there.
But that realization didn’t make her feel any safer.
Bonnie had been bullied before, thanks to Hannah’s fans, and she knew girls could be just as dangerous as anyone else.
She picked up her phone and pulled up the emergency number on the screen, just in case. After slipping on her shoes, she walked slowly to the door.
The digital peephole showed a fuzzy, black-and-white image that looked almost creepy in the middle of the night. But when Bonnie focused, she recognized the figure standing there.
A huge rush of relief flooded her and she realized her back was soaked in cold sweat.
It was the girl from next door, the one in 1209. They’d moved in on the same day. Whenever they bumped into each other, they’d exchange a quick hello.
Bonnie waited for her heartbeat to settle down before opening the door. “It’s a bit late. What’s going on?”
“I thought you weren’t home,” the girl said, looking embarrassed. “I just wanted to check, are your outlets working? My lights are fine but every outlet’s dead. I tried the breaker box, but I can’t figure it out. The switches won’t stay up at all. I didn’t really want to bother the building staff this late.”
Not long ago, Bonnie had helped her neighbor unclog the bathroom sink. She’d always seemed like she had it all together, almost like someone from another world, so the neighbor naturally came to her for help again.
“It’s probably something with one of your appliances,” Bonnie said, grabbing a cardigan and heading next door.
Inside, the breaker in the fuse box had tripped. Bonnie pointed it out. “You have to press this little blue button first, then you can flip the switch back up.”
Once they reset it, the electricity came back on. Bonnie noticed her neighbor was trying to boil water with an electric kettle. The moment it started heating, the breaker popped again.
