When Bonnie got to the airport, she spotted Lawrence through the glass wall of the business lounge. He had his head in his hand, eyes closed, looking like he was trying to catch a nap. Hannah was sitting right beside him, smiling sweetly as she posed for selfies on her phone.
As soon as Hannah saw Bonnie, she smiled again, stood up, and walked straight over.
Bonnie’s chest tightened. Hannah’s bright, happy look stung more than she wanted to admit. Bonnie’s gaze dropped automatically to Hannah’s stomach. Hannah still had that dancer’s figure—long and lean, with a flat stomach that looked almost unreal.
Noticing Bonnie staring, Hannah put her hand gently over her stomach, her voice soft but cutting as she leaned closer. “I really hoped you’d show up, Bonnie. I wanted to say sorry face-to-face. I mean it. That day we went skiing, Lawrence and I got way too drunk. Later, we both thought the whole thing was ridiculous and… honestly, we felt guilty. But Lawrence told me he only started dating you because he wanted to get back at me. He said I shouldn’t feel bad about it, that he’d explain things to you and then be with me.”
Bonnie had heard versions of this story before. Hannah’s friends loved to tease her, half-joking, half-serious, about how Lawrence used to be in love with Hannah, how he got rejected as a teenager and then acted out of spite.
But Lawrence always denied it. He never cared about lying just to save face, and he’d even yelled at Hannah in front of Bonnie. Bonnie chose to trust him.
She didn’t want to waste any energy arguing with Hannah. She tried to step around her and head straight for Lawrence, but Hannah blocked her path.
