Hannah shook her head. “Dad, Mom, you’re both so sure I was involved, but do you actually have any proof?”
Odette hadn’t even opened her mouth when Lawrence crushed out his cigarette, the air thick with the sharp smell of smoke. His voice was like steel. “You really think Nana isn’t going to talk?”
He’d checked everything. Not a single cent went between Nana and Hannah. He knew Hannah was way too careful to leave any evidence behind. All she had to do was say the word, and Nana would handle the rest.
But secrets always have a way of coming out. Whoever did this would have to face it.
“Hannah, you’re not getting away with it.” Lawrence gave a cold little laugh. “Nana’s dad has been supplying Golden Horizon Enterprises for years, thanks to an introduction you made back in the day. After all these years, their business hasn’t really taken off, has it? If something bad happens now... what do you think will happen to everyone in the James family, or the hundreds of people working at their company?”
Hannah lifted her head suddenly, almost defiant, but when her eyes landed on Odette and Carl, she relaxed a bit. The Lane family was known for its integrity. There was no way they’d let Lawrence drag innocent people into this.
“Lawrence, I get that you feel guilty about Bonnie, but Nana is going to face legal consequences, and that should be enough. Going after her family? Isn’t that pushing things too far?”
“And what about you? You went to the US to catch an American citizen. Did you even bother with the proper paperwork? You violated his civil rights, forced him back here, and then you...”
“That’s enough!” Lawrence exploded, his face twisted in anger, eyes blazing, breath coming in heavy gasps. He looked scarier than Hannah had ever seen.
Hannah stood her ground, face cold, refusing to back down.
The whole room had fallen silent. Everyone seemed to be holding their breath. Even Jackson, standing off to the side with a complicated look in his eyes, understood. No matter how you looked at it, Hannah was tangled up in all of this.
It wasn’t like the plan was particularly subtle either. Anyone could see Nana had no reason to pull something like this on her own.
And yet Hannah had gone ahead anyway, knowing there was no real way out.
