Nana turned her head and caught sight of Lawrence, completely shattered. Tears streaked down his face, his eyes full of pain and disbelief that felt almost tangible, hovering right on the edge of spilling over.
For the first time, she clearly understood the weight of their guilt. All those harmless words they once tossed around had turned into a heap of blades and fire, keeping two people who loved each other apart.
Now, everything was falling apart and it was all their fault. This was what they deserved.
Nana’s voice trembled. “I’m telling you this because… I need you to know. Hannah’s target this time might not even be Bonnie. She’s not trying to ruin Bonnie or force her to leave… like before, what she really wants is to destroy any chance you and Bonnie have. Because after so much hurt, love and trust just aren’t enough. Even if Bonnie knew the truth, she’d never forgive you. There’s no way back for you two. That’s exactly what Hannah wants.”
Lawrence sat there, absolutely still, his thoughts crawling painfully slow as if buried under ice.
It was like he floated out of his body and watched from above. He saw himself frozen in the chair, hands and legs shaking, his face twisted in pain.
His teeth were clenched so tight they clicked.
He watched as Abbot rushed over, trying desperately to snap him out of it. Abbot shook him and pressed a finger under his nose. He saw himself get up and slam his fists into the wall, raw and desperate.
Eventually, the police led him out. The hallway was filled with the sound of his low growls and broken shouts.
Minutes ticked by, maybe hours, before he felt like himself again.
