What had he even done since coming back home?
Lawrence shut his eyes, feeling that familiar sting of regret pulse through him. It was like he couldn’t even keep track of everything he’d screwed up. Mistake after mistake, his life just felt like a never-ending list of things gone wrong.
He’d tried to keep it together, tried to tuck all that restless, messy energy somewhere deep inside. But the instant he saw Bonnie, every ounce of willpower just snapped, like his nerves had finally hit breaking point and everything exploded.
Finding out that Bonnie was out on a blind date, something inside him just lost it. All he could think was, no. That couldn’t happen. Bonnie with someone else? He couldn’t accept it.
She was his. That thought just wrapped around him, tighter every time he tried to fight it off. It squeezed him until he could barely breathe. Nothing made it go away. Not even pain.
He knew he had to do something. Anything, just to ease the ache for a second. He wandered back to what felt easiest—seeing Bonnie, keeping her from her dates. Even though it meant doing things he knew she’d hate, he just kept repeating the same mistake, over and over.
He told himself to stop. After all, they were broken up, strangers to each other now. It was all his fault, anyway. He had no grounds to meddle in her life anymore.
But Lawrence never managed to stop himself. Every time, he did the wrong thing.
Even talking to Quentin about it was torture. Each word burned his throat like he was choking on glass, making his whole body tense with guilt.
Lawrence was losing all control. When Quentin tried to pull him away, he couldn’t believe how strong Lawrence was, how he wouldn’t let up, hurting himself like he didn’t even care.
“Lawrence, stop. Lawrence.” Quentin repeated his name, panicked. “You’re not yourself, you’re just sick right now. Please, stop blaming yourself.”
But Lawrence couldn’t hear any of it. He just kept going, hitting his wound again and again, needing the physical pain to quiet some of the chaos inside.
Quentin tried to restrain him but couldn’t. Desperate, he finally called for help.
