The noise was so startling that Odette hurried around the screen to check. When she saw what was happening, it hit her so hard she almost collapsed, her body swaying as if her heart had actually taken a blow.
Quentin, Odette, and a couple of nurses worked together to hold Lawrence down. He was in bad shape, way too tired and running on no sleep, but he still fought against them, refusing to give in. In the end, they had to sedate him to get him to calm down.
Odette dabbed at the blood oozing from Lawrence’s wound, her hand trembling as she wiped it away. In that moment, she looked so much older, like all her grace and warmth had disappeared in seconds.
Quentin let out a heavy sigh. “Odette, you saw it yourself. Lawrence’s situation is serious. He just can’t take any more of this pressure. If he keeps going like this, something terrible will happen, and we might lose him for good.”
Odette gripped Lawrence’s hand firmly. She’d heard everything Quentin just said—how Lawrence had gone after Bonnie so many times, haunted her life. That was never the kind of thing Lawrence would have done before.
She forced herself to speak, her voice barely more than a whisper. “Quentin, is there any hope for him?”
Quentin hesitated, choosing his words carefully. “When it comes to mental health, there are never any promises. But the most important thing right now is keeping him far away from what’s hurting him. I don’t know if you noticed, but Lawrence has started acting just like Hannah. Even when he doesn’t realize it, her influence on him is huge.”
Odette looked up at him, eyes wide with shock.
Quentin continued, “From a psychological perspective, Lawrence’s obsession with Bonnie is compulsive. People in this kind of paranoid state aren’t in control; they’re acting on instinct more than reason. He learned this behavior from the way Hannah used to manipulate him. It gives him a tiny bit of relief when he does these things, so he keeps repeating them. But the pain isn’t gone. He just passes it on to someone else.”
