Three Years Later, He Came Back Begging novel Chapter 258

Even from the bank, Lawrence knew the person in the river wasn't Bonnie. Panic had clouded his judgment. Bonnie was always so careful; she never would have wandered down to the dangerous water's edge when she knew the risks.

But he jumped in anyway, because the person drowning was a young girl, and her mother was on the bank screaming hysterically for help.

She must have been posing for a picture when the sudden surge from upstream shattered the ice ledge she was standing on.

If he didn't help, she was going to drown—or freeze to death.

Had he stayed up on the safety of the road, he might not have intervened. But he was already at the water's edge. He couldn't just stand there and watch a child fight for her life in the freezing current.

The moment Lawrence hit the water, his goggles were ripped away by the current. His vision blurred into a chilling wash of white and churning, muddy water that had lost its vibrant emerald hue.

He couldn't worry about his lost disguise. The agonizing, bone-deep cold instantly consumed him. It was an indescribable shock—as if the blood in his veins had literally turned to ice. The cold was so severe it instantly morphed into pure, blinding agony.

Icy daggers pierced through his waterproof windbreaker, his fleece lining, and his sweater, biting ruthlessly into his skin.

It felt as if he was being flayed alive.

Gritting his teeth, Lawrence grabbed a jagged chunk of floating ice to anchor himself, intercepting the little girl as she swept past. His body was already battered from his skiing falls over the past few days, and the strain on his arms felt like his limbs were being torn off. The veins in his forehead throbbed wildly from the pain.

Worse yet, his thin cotton gloves offered zero protection. Gripping the freezing ice drained the last reserves of strength from his muscles.

Lawrence had no intention of dying here. He still had so much left to do. And what would be the point of dying now? When they eventually pulled his body out and removed his mask, Bonnie would recognize him.

If he died right in front of her, it would only burden a soft-hearted person like Bonnie with a lifetime of guilt.
