And Jackson lost whatever sliver of courage he had to step forward and own his mistake.
Lawrence closed his eyes, taking a slow breath before opening them again. His hands, shoved deep into his pockets, curled into tight, numb fists. He couldn't even articulate the storm inside him. The sheer absurdity of it all was sickening.
"And then?" he asked coldly. "When did she finally remember the truth?"
Jackson stared blankly at the brilliant sunset painting the horizon. Ever since that fatal mistake, the world had lost its color. He hadn't stopped to admire a single view in years.
His entire existence revolved around her. He just wanted to atone.
"When I followed her to the States, I watched her use her life to blackmail you into submission over and over again. I thought about confessing, but I was terrified it would shatter her fragile psyche and push her to suicide. I kept my mouth shut, thinking I would at least wait until the baby was born to tell you all."
But fate had other plans. Shortly after her postpartum recovery, he walked in on a vicious fight between the two of them. Lawrence had lost his temper and stormed out without looking back, leaving Jackson alone to pick up the pieces.
Her mental state was erratic. She was consumed by resentment, jealousy, and an overwhelming sense of injustice. In her twisted mind, she and Lawrence were destined lovers, and Bonnie was the homewrecker who tainted his affections.
She declared she wanted revenge. She wanted Lawrence to taste the agonizing pain of a lover's betrayal.
She had initiated it. Jackson hadn't wanted to repeat his sins, but the moment he tried to pull away, she looked at him with those pitiful, desperate eyes.
It was another terrible mistake, compounding the first.
"I don't know what triggered her memory," Jackson murmured, his gaze distant. "Right as I kissed her, her expression morphed. She looked terrified, horrified, and then... stunned. The color drained from her face as the realization hit her. She shoved me away and slapped me. Then she hit me again and again until she collapsed, sobbing hysterically. I was fully prepared to pay the price for my actions, but she told me... she told me to keep my mouth shut."
She forbade him from breathing a word of it to anyone.
