A suffocating wave of despair crashed over Jackson. He stared at the bold letters on the paternity report until his vision blurred.
"Lawrence, she... Hannah wasn't faking it entirely," he stammered. "She really was sick..."
Lawrence lowered his gaze and crushed his cigarette into an ashtray, cutting off the pointless defense. "Start from that night at the ski resort three years ago."
Knowing the truth could no longer be buried, Jackson's shoulders slumped. The last ounce of strength drained from his body.
He had a performance that night. Backstage, he accidentally overheard a dancer who was close to Hannah talking to her on speakerphone.
The girl was asking if Hannah had left her knee pads at the studio. Over the line, it was painfully obvious that Hannah was drunk and crying, though she still sounded somewhat coherent.
The colleague asked for her hotel and room number, offering to call the front desk to send up some painkillers and check on her.
Hannah slurred out the details before hanging up in a daze. When the colleague called the hotel, no one answered.
The curtain rose shortly after, and everyone had to rush to their spots.
Jackson knew she had specifically canceled her performance that day to go skiing. As dance partners, they were practically inseparable, and her obsessive feelings for Lawrence were no secret to him.
After overhearing that call, his mind had been spinning. He worried she was drinking herself into a stupor over Lawrence and Bonnie.
He nearly botched his routine on stage. Barely pushing through the finale, he parted ways with the troupe and immediately had his driver reroute to the ski resort.
By the time he arrived, the entire area was hit by a massive power outage. Crews were scrambling to fix the grid after a major incident, leaving the resort draped in pitch black. Jackson navigated his way to her room and knocked for ages before she finally opened the door.
She was intoxicated beyond reason. In the blinding darkness, she couldn't make out his face. Delirious and desperate, she mistook him for Lawrence.
