Lawrence checked the sky. Even if it did rain, he figured it wouldn't be a downpour. There were still plenty of tourists heading up the trail.
"Do you just want to wander around the base, or actually hike up?" he asked.
Pushing her sunglasses up onto her head, Bonnie looked toward the peak. It was early October, and the leaves were already shifting into gorgeous shades of yellow and red, mixed in with vibrant greens. The scenery was stunning.
"We're already here, aren't we?" she replied.
He smiled. "I knew you'd say that. Let's go. I'll pick June up after we clear this first stretch."
With June on the leash, they headed up the paved walking path toward the summit. The incline here was gentle, making it easy to hike and chat without getting winded. The temperature was perfect, and the air was crisp and fresh.
Ridgeview Peak was nowhere near as commercialized as Caledon. Some sections of the trail were pretty rugged. After they had climbed for a bit, Lawrence strapped June into the carrier on his chest and offered his arm to Bonnie so she could use it for support on the steeper sections.
The higher they went, the fewer people they saw. By the time they reached the summit, it was mostly just hardcore hikers left.
Seeing them with a dog—especially one sporting a set of braces—was a total novelty. People kept stopping to play with June, and the pup was incredibly social, wagging her tail at absolutely everyone.
As soon as Lawrence let her out of the carrier, she was weaving excitedly between people's legs.
A very enthusiastic young woman and her boyfriend mentioned they had been debating adopting a puppy but hadn't pulled the trigger yet. Seeing June instantly melted their hearts. The woman even snapped a few photos of June flashing her brace-face grin.
Afterward, she kindly asked if Lawrence and Bonnie wanted a family photo.
She clearly assumed they were a couple.
Lawrence glanced at Bonnie. Seeing that she wasn't about to object, he handed his phone to the woman. "That would be great, thank you."
Now, told to pose, she froze. Instinctively, she looked up at him, waiting for him to make a move. He looked down, and meeting her eyes, he felt a sudden, overwhelming urge to kiss her.
But he was still in the probationary period. It wasn't the right time.
Instead, he reached up, cupped the back of her head, and suddenly bent down, grabbing her by the thighs and hoisting her up into the air. She let out a soft yelp and wrapped her arms tightly around his neck.
It was a pose they used to do all the time. Resting against his shoulder, she let his arms and upper body support all her weight.
Looking down at his massive, beaming smile, she broke into a radiant grin of her own, throwing up a cheesy peace sign.
The young woman was absolutely thrilled with the last few shots. When she handed the phone back, she gushed about how incredibly gorgeous they were together and called them a match made in heaven.
Bonnie wanted to see the photos, but Lawrence still had her hoisted in the air. Even after the couple walked away, he made absolutely no move to put her down.
