It was Lawrence.
A spark of pure joy instantly ignited in Bonnie's eyes, burning so brightly even Yvonne could feel the shift in the room's energy from her bed.
"Well, look who finally made it," Yvonne teased dramatically. "Sigh. It makes me miss my Perry. When are the comms going to be back up? I want to make a phone call."
Forcing her emotions back under control, Bonnie walked over and tucked the blankets securely around her friend. "Go to sleep. You talk too much."
With that handled, she practically sprinted to the door.
Sharing a room with Yvonne meant she couldn't invite Lawrence inside. The moment she cracked the door open, the freezing mountain air hit her, and she shivered.
A split second later, she was yanked forward and wrapped in a suffocatingly tight embrace. "Candie, I missed you so much," Lawrence murmured, his voice thick with raw need.
Bonnie bit her lip and didn't say a word. The hug was incredibly warm, and she couldn't bring herself to push him away. The icy fabric of his black down jacket pressed against her cheek, keeping her grounded even as she melted against him.
"Did you get everything sorted out? With the company?" she asked, closing her eyes and letting herself indulge in the closeness, just for tonight.
Lawrence nodded. Unwilling to let the freezing air touch her, he unzipped his jacket, enveloped her inside, and effortlessly scooped her off the ground, carrying her down the row of temporary structures.
Bonnie glanced around. The task force's housing was a fair distance from the most devastated zones. The only light came from a few dim, swaying bulbs hanging outside the doors, and the area was completely deserted.
Trusting him implicitly, she let him carry her into an empty prefab unit a short walk away.
"So this was reserved for you!" Bonnie noted, finally understanding why they had an extra unit.
A low chuckle rumbled in Lawrence's chest. He kicked the door shut, set her on her feet, and immediately pulled her right back into his arms, holding her fiercely. "From now on, this is where I'll work. And I'll be right beside you."
Over the past three days, he had been working around the clock to finalize the logistics in Oasinia. He hadn't slept a wink last night, boarding the plane the second his final meeting wrapped up.
Upon landing in Cloudspire, Lawrence had been terrified the altitude would hit him hard, but thankfully, he held up well.
Bonnie gave him a warm, heart-melting smile. "I'm the one who's handling the altitude best out of everyone on our team. They had to rely on me the first few days. I knocked out several site surveys all on my own. Besides, I didn't need a babysitter. I'm here for disaster relief, not a vacation."
"And you can't just abandon your company on a whim," she added, her tone turning stern. "You worked overtime just to get here early, didn't you? Do you not care about your eyes anymore?"
His heart ached with how much he loved her. Giving in just a little, he pressed a feather-light kiss to her forehead, as soft as the dust drifting in the Highvale air.
He hadn't even had time to shave. The rough stubble scratched gently against her skin, and Bonnie let out a quiet giggle, shrinking closer into his warmth.
Gripping her shoulders, Lawrence let out a long, contented sigh.
"There was a lot to organize, and I had to make sure everything was running smoothly. But since The Lane Group spearheaded the initiative, the public response has been phenomenal. A lot of independent relief teams are already en route. The power and communication lines should be mostly restored by tomorrow."
Bonnie nodded against his chest, her voice muffled. "We're working hard, too. The leadership at the command center wants the reconstruction blueprints finalized within three months. The goal is to have the first batch of resettlement housing ready and the residents moved back in by the end of next year at the latest. The restoration of the historical sites can't be delayed either. Lawrence... this is so much harder than I ever imagined."
