But Bonnie was no different.
The senior professors from the Kingswood University team, especially Dale, were all older and battling health issues. Out of respect, the younger generation took on the brunt of the work.
It was completely normal for Bonnie to be up drafting until the early hours of the morning.
And yet, here she was, criticizing him. With his eyes still squeezed shut, Lawrence reached out, blindly hauling her into his lap.
Bonnie gave a half-hearted struggle before surrendering, lightly thumping his chest with her fist.
She huffed in mock indignation.
To Lawrence, it was the most adorable form of affection.
He was practically drowning in everyday domestic bliss. So when she suddenly started giving him the cold shoulder out in public, he was incredibly confused.
And mildly panicked.
Approaching her cautiously, he tried to take the broom from her hand. Bonnie pulled it away, her expression tight. "Go do your own work. Leave me alone."
His eyes widened. He opened his mouth to ask what was wrong, but she shot him a vicious glare. Afraid to make a scene in front of the crew, he scratched his head in defeat and went back to dismantling the spare tents.
Every few minutes, he would glance over his shoulder at her.
She ignored him completely, refusing to spare him even a second glance.
Lawrence pressed his lips together, racking his brain, but he couldn't figure out how he had offended her. Just last night, she had playfully ordered him to warm her freezing hands.
She had been smiling, her cheeks carrying a cute, wind-chapped rosiness. When he teased her about it, she hadn't gotten mad—she just poked his equally windburned cheek.
She had joked that they looked like a pair of shiny red apples.
Everything was perfect. Why was she suddenly so angry?
But her pride wouldn't let her back down and offer an olive branch just yet. She glanced up and saw Lawrence laughing with a group of children, handing out his fruit to them.
He looked like he was in a great mood.
A moment later, he finished his food and walked right out of the cafeteria without even looking in her direction.
A new wave of irritation hit her, and she aggressively stabbed her rice with her fork.
She was furious, and he clearly didn't even care.
Yvonne gave her a weird look. Bonnie immediately pretended everything was fine, scarfed down the rest of her food, and was just about to clear her tray when a little local girl ran up to the table.
She looked incredibly shy, her big, bright eyes sparkling beautifully. Holding her tiny hand in a fist, she offered it to Bonnie, her Mandarin heavily accented.
"Sister..."
