There was blood on them, too.
Neither of them cared. Locking eyes, Bonnie gently placed her hands over his, her own eyes shimmering with unshed tears.
He wanted to wipe them away, but his hands were aching so fiercely he could barely maintain his hold on her.
Yet, the stinging agony was grounding. It proved this wasn't a dream. She was truly here, alive and breathing, safely tucked within his arms and entirely within reach.
Unable to hold back his own tears, hot drops fell against her skin. Slowly leaning down, he rested his forehead against hers.
"Candie..."
"I was so terrified."
"I can't lose you again."
She let out a shaky breath. She felt the exact same way. Watching him in a state of absolute despair, screaming her name until his voice broke in the middle of a disaster zone, had shaken her to her core.
In that moment, she was profoundly moved.
It was a feeling infinitely more intense than any passing flutter of romance. They had survived so much, even cheating death itself. They truly couldn't afford to lose each other anymore.
Feeling the warmth of his breath, she gazed deep into his bloodshot eyes and whispered, "Lawrence, I want to be with you. Starting right now..."
Her final word was swallowed by his mouth. He kissed her with an urgent, desperate hunger, parting her lips and deepening the kiss like a man starved, drawing every ounce of security he could from her touch.
Her eyelashes fluttered. She wanted to remind him that they were in public. Even though they were in a safe zone, surrounded by displaced locals waiting for aid, making a scene felt a little inappropriate. But in his current state, there was no way he was going to listen.
Every deep thrust of his tongue carried years of stockpiled longing, regret, sorrow, and ultimately, the euphoric gratitude of having his happiness returned to him. Cupping her face, he claimed every inch of her mouth with possessive heat.
The last time their lips had met, he had forced himself on her. While the physical contact had momentarily soothed his inner demons, the emotional agony had remained entirely unresolved.
Because back then, she had hated him. Resented him. She hadn't loved him.
