Three Years Later, He Came Back Begging novel Chapter 44

Aiken glanced over at the man next to him, who was soaked and clearly had more than a few drinks. “Where’s your ID?”

Lawrence didn’t have it on him. He paused, focusing on Aiken for a second before answering with a frown. “It’s in the car. I left it there.”

“Do you have your digital ID? If not, just tell me the number.”

Lawrence rattled off his ID number, and soon a police officer pulled him aside in the hallway for a few more questions. They wanted to know about his job, how he knew Bonnie, and why he kept showing up outside her building.

Meanwhile, Bonnie, now bundled up with a coat and accompanied by another officer, was struggling with a sharp pain in her stomach. She poured herself a cup of hot water and waited for the discomfort to fade.

The security guard couldn’t keep quiet, sharing everything he’d seen these last few days. Ever since Bonnie was followed home that night, he’d watched for trouble. He swore that every time he was on shift, a fancy car would turn up, waiting outside the complex. The guy buying cigarettes just to let them burn away, sleeping in his car, picking up little things Bonnie threw out… it was all just so strange to him.

Bonnie lifted her eyes, glancing toward the door just in time to see Lawrence standing beside the police, his usual sharpness returning in front of authority. Suddenly, she realized the box she’d left by the trash hadn’t just disappeared. Lawrence had taken it.

Frustration started to rise in her chest, complicated and heavy, but it faded before she could even put it into words. Anger or not, it didn’t matter anymore.

She didn’t want anything to do with Lawrence. Not after everything.

So when the police asked her, in private, about her relationship with Lawrence and if she’d been harassed by anyone else, she just shook her head. No, she didn’t want to go down to the station. “As long as he stays away, that’s enough.”

The officers were used to these kinds of situations. This looked just like another case of a breakup gone bad, an ex-boyfriend who couldn’t let go. They finished jotting down their reports, gave Bonnie a copy, and issued Lawrence a stern warning before getting ready to leave.

From the hallway, Lawrence just stared at her, silent and unmovable.

Eventually, he left.

Bonnie thanked the police and the security guard, grateful they’d bothered to show up.
