Three Years Later, He Came Back Begging novel Chapter 45

Aiken didn’t push for more details.

“My name’s Aiken. It sounds like ‘alkene’. My mom teaches chemistry. She always hoped I’d be like an alkene… you know, good at connecting with people. So I ended up in the police academy and now I’m the neighborhood officer here.”

Bonnie felt the heaviness of her night start to lift, just a little, thanks to his easy humor.

She smiled, her eyes curving with honest warmth. “Honestly? I bet your mom hoped you’d meet the other carbon atom in your life.”

Aiken looked genuinely amused. His eyes softened, his eyebrows lifted like he hadn’t expected that. “Wow, you actually know chemistry. If my mom knew someone got her joke, she’d be over the moon.”

Alkene—an organic compound with a double bond, two carbons locked together.

Bonnie found it clever. She liked his name, felt like she’d never forget it.

“My number’s on the report slip,” Aiken said, waving his phone gently. “And I’ve got yours too. If you ever feel threatened again, just call me. We respond fast.”

Bonnie thanked him with a small nod, though deep down, she doubted things with Lawrence would ever get so ugly again.

Tonight, he’d just drunk too much, lost his head for a little while. Tomorrow, he’d remember his wife, his kid, and who he really was.

Aiken didn’t linger. The elevator arrived. He stepped in, but just as the doors were sliding shut, he called out, “Mind if I add you on WeChat? I still owe you for that snowboard lesson, remember?”

Bonnie blinked, caught off guard, but the elevator was already gone.

She stood there for a second before heading home.

The night felt unreal, almost like something out of a weird dream. Bonnie sat on the little bench in her entryway, feeling completely drained. She locked the door and barely had time to catch her breath before her phone pinged with a friend request.

Aiken’s profile photo showed a man saluting the national emblem. His username—even more surprising—was literally the chemical formula for alkene.

Bonnie accepted without thinking too much.

Aiken didn’t make small talk. He just sent one message: “If there’s ever a problem, the police are here to help.”
