The September air in Cabinda still carried a dry, lingering heat. Even though it was late afternoon, the setting sun suspended in the amber sky continued to beam down intensely.
On the campus of The Cabinda School, students in uniform blue-and-white tracksuits sat on their stools, lined up in perfectly neat grids on the athletic field, sectioned off by grade and class.
Today was the freshman orientation ceremony.
The principal had just finished his speech. Now standing at the podium was the freshman valedictorian, a shy boy who had scored the highest on the middle school exit exams.
Rumor had it he had skipped a grade, too.
But considering every student who managed to test into this elite high school had been a top-tier prodigy in their former schools, the crowd below was mostly unfazed.
The real bloodbath was only just beginning. Holding onto that number-one spot for the next three years was going to be anything but easy.
Over in the Senior Class Eight section, hardly anyone bothered looking up at the stage. Some were reading, some were memorizing vocabulary flashcards, and others were quietly chatting.
In the very back row on the right, a boy sat carelessly, hunched forward with his elbows resting on his knees. He cupped his chin in his hand, staring intently at a large black beetle crawling through the grass.
He watched it right up until the bug looked like it was about to crawl onto his shoe.
Just as he was about to look up, thunderous applause erupted. The valedictorian had finished his speech, and the evening performances were about to begin.
The host's crisp, perfectly enunciated voice echoed through the speakers, announcing the opening act: a violin solo titled 'Flower Dance' performed by freshman Bonnie.
The moment the name was announced, the boys in Senior Class Eight erupted into wild cheering. A few of the bolder ones cupped their hands around their mouths, whistling and hollering to hype up the moment.
The polite applause from the other classes slowly died out as Senior Class Eight instantly became the center of attention. Hundreds of curious eyes snapped in their direction.
