"Who the hell are you?" Abby was seething. Seeing a strikingly handsome guy step up to defend Bonnie only fueled her anger. She narrowed her eyes, convinced she had just stumbled upon Bonnie's dirty little secret.
Bridget scoffed, thinking she had it all figured out. "And here we thought our beautiful Bonnie was too good for everyone, looking down her nose at the rest of us. Now you're sneaking around with boys? Where's all that high-and-mighty attitude now? What a hypocrite!"
Before Bonnie could even open her mouth, Lawrence's expression darkened. His normally warm, approachable eyes turned into a predatory glare as he locked onto the two girls.
"Which school do you go to?" he demanded, his voice dropping to a dangerous chill. "I'm Bonnie's cousin, not her boyfriend. You'd better watch your mouths and take responsibility for your words. If any of this garbage makes its way back to our campus, I'll personally have the school board hold you accountable."
Abby and Bridget exchanged a nervous glance. They didn't look much like cousins, but this guy clearly wasn't someone to mess with.
"Whatever. Stop acting so tough. We didn't even do anything. Is it a crime to chat with an old classmate?" Abby quickly tried to play it cool. "Talking isn't illegal, right?"
Bridget chimed in, "Exactly. Did we even say anything?"
Lawrence gave them a blank, withering look. When he turned back to Bonnie, his gaze instantly softened. Upon closer inspection, he actually looked a little flustered.
His ears were burning.
He didn't quite dare to meet Bonnie's eyes, so he fixed his stare on the tip of her delicate nose. "Bonnie, tell me. Did they bully you?"
Lawrence had just been at the mall to buy some sneakers. The moment he came up the escalator, he spotted a familiar silhouette. He thought his mind was playing tricks on him, especially since he hadn't been sleeping well lately.
He had been terrified that his secret, embarrassing little crush was making him see things in broad daylight.
But his subconscious had guided him toward her anyway, and the next second, he saw that girl with the permed hair shoving her.
Lawrence knew a friendly chat didn't look like that.
