"I don't oppose you dating. But if a relationship requires you to constantly lie and deceive your family, then I have to wonder if you're doing things far more reckless and out of line."
Tears welled in Bonnie’s eyes as she shook her head frantically. "No, Mom, I swear. We're not even officially together yet. We're just trying things out. We went on a trip, but we didn't stay in the same room. He was your student. Don't you know what kind of person he is?"
Shirley went silent for a moment, staring coldly at her daughter's tearful face. "It's exactly because he was my student that I'm furious you two teamed up to lie to me!"
"That boy you were texting two years ago—that was him too, wasn't it?" she stated with absolute certainty. "No wonder his performance slipped back then. I thought it was just pre-exam stress. It turns out it was because of you!"
Bonnie bowed her head, shame burning in her chest.
She knew it. She knew her mother would eventually connect the dots.
"I always thought you were focused on your own future. But your actions have proven to me that you let your emotions control you. Today, you're lying to me for a boy. Tomorrow, will you cut ties with your family for him?"
"Do you even know who the Lane family is? Do you know what his father does, or his grandparents' background? Even Odette's family is completely out of our league. Yes, he was my student, but I need you to understand something. People change at every stage of their lives. Will his pure, eighteen-year-old sincerity last a lifetime, or is it just a phase? My years as his homeroom teacher don't qualify me to predict that."
She opened her mouth to argue, her lips parting, but no words came out.
There was nothing she could say to refute it.
Shirley let out a heavy sigh. "From what I know, his family expects him to study abroad after graduation. He’ll have to build his own business overseas and prove his competence before returning to take over the family empire. Do you think that’s something that happens in just a year or two?"
"Have you thought about whether this fleeting thrill is enough to carry you through? Once his infatuation fades and his horizons broaden, do you really think he'll settle for you? Can you handle the international time difference? Can you endure the inevitable coldness in a long-distance relationship?"
A heavy lump formed in her throat. She had never considered the fact that he might leave the country. Just hearing the words out loud made a suffocating weight settle on her chest.
