She glared at him furiously, unable to come up with a single comeback.
His laughter rumbled against her. "There are millions of impressive people in the world. Am I supposed to fall for every single one I meet? You think you're the only one insecure about this?"
"Walk through The Cabinda University right now. Every single student there is top-tier. Do I look like the type of guy who hops from bed to bed? If I were a player, I would have had you in my bed a long time ago. You think I'd be sitting here, patiently waiting and begging for your attention like an idiot?"
"If you're going to accuse me like that, should I assume that the second a better guy comes along, you're going to drop me without a second thought?"
Her cheeks burned with genuine shame. Deep down, she knew neither of them were the type to jump ship at the slightest temptation.
But when the panic had set in, her logic had just short-circuited entirely.
He smoothed a hand down her back to comfort her. "No one on earth is flawless. So the whole concept of 'leaving you for someone better' doesn't even exist in my reality. I truly believe that being together means cherishing the good, accepting the bad, and putting in the work to build a life together."
"Besides, I'm way more insecure than you are, Candie. Out of the two of us, I've always been the one punching above my weight. Someday, you're going to realize how messed up I am, and you're going to throw me out."
She tilted her head, thoroughly confused. She couldn't picture a single flaw in him that she couldn't tolerate.
He leaned down, pressing a lingering kiss against her lips. "I'm incredibly possessive and overbearing. Tell me you aren't going to get sick of me."
She shook her head blindly. She was a complete amateur when it came to romance. Right now, she couldn't even conceptualize their future struggles—her heart was simply consumed by the intoxicating high of being in love.
It was beautiful, and she wanted every single second of it.
