It was the gift he had promised her. Lawrence popped the box open and lifted out a delicate diamond necklace. Bonnie had her eyes squeezed shut, but feeling the cool metal brush against her neck, she fluttered them open in surprise. Glancing down, she saw a stunning teardrop diamond resting perfectly against her collarbone, catching the dim morning light. She pursed her lips, refusing to admit out loud how beautiful it was. "Do you like it?" Lawrence whispered. Bonnie snapped her eyes shut again and stayed silent. Knowing he was already treading on thin ice, Lawrence didn't push his luck. He reached over, flicked off the lamp, and settled in to catch a few hours of sleep with her. He really was exhausted this time, dead to the world the second his head hit the pillow. Listening to the steady, rhythmic sound of his breathing, Bonnie slowly opened her eyes. They were tangled together, chest to chest—the exact way they slept every night. It felt so incredibly right that a wave of warm security washed over her. The hotel the university had booked in Verdania had paper-thin walls. Located right in the middle of a rural town, the mornings were loud, filled with the sounds of farm animals. She hadn't gotten a single good night's rest since she arrived. And she had missed him terribly. Having Lawrence here made her feel grounded, but she was still harboring a massive amount of frustration with nowhere to direct it. What should have been a perfect reunion had turned into a bitter argument followed by hours of him ruthlessly taking her bare. She had begged him to stop, and he had completely ignored her. It infuriated her. She stared at him, grinding her teeth, and raised a tiny fist, shaking it in front of his sleeping face. Lawrence looked so peaceful, completely relaxed and unguarded. Bonnie silently cursed him for sleeping so soundly while her entire body ached to the point where lifting her arm felt like a workout. And now she couldn't even fall back asleep. She genuinely debated punching him to wake him up, but her heart softened almost immediately. Even in the dim light, she could see the dark, bruised circles under his eyes. He hadn't been lying—he had pulled back-to-back all-nighters just to finish his projects and get to her faster. And yet, he had still found the energy to ravage her like a madman. She didn't possess Lawrence's shameless audacity. He could talk dirty to her without blinking an eye, but just remembering the way he had dominated her made her face burn like a furnace. Tangled in her chaotic thoughts, exhaustion finally claimed her. Out of pure habit, she shifted, finding the perfect, comfortable nook against his chest. Lawrence didn't wake, but his arms instinctively tightened around her. Outside, the sky slowly began to brighten. A rooster crowed in the distance just as the two of them finally fell into a deep sleep. Bonnie slept heavily, eventually rolling over so that she was draped entirely across Lawrence's chest, her full weight pressing down on him. The heavy pressure against his lungs, combined with the soft, warm weight suffocating him, began to alter Lawrence's sleep. He didn't know if his body was just exhausted or if the dream he was trapped in was genuinely that terrifying, but he suddenly found it hard to breathe. His brow furrowed deeply, a sheen of cold sweat breaking out across his forehead. His breathing grew erratic and heavy, his lips moving as he desperately mumbled something in his sleep. If Bonnie had been awake, she would have heard him frantically whispering her name. But she was dead to the world. Completely relaxed in her favorite position, she merely shifted closer, clinging to him tighter and slipping deeper into sleep. Suffocated by the grip, Lawrence felt like he was drowning in an endlessly agonizing nightmare. If he couldn't break free, he felt like he would be trapped in that dark terror forever. His face twisted in sheer agony, his eyes darting frantically beneath his closed lids. Perhaps sensing his distress, Bonnie let out a soft, annoyed hum against his ear. That tiny sound was the anchor that yanked Lawrence back to reality. He violently snapped his eyes open, gasping for air. His entire back was drenched in a cold sweat.
