How could a wound ever heal if you kept picking at it?
For the first time, she pointed right at Bonnie and called her pathetic. She asked if Bonnie was still waiting, hoping Lawrence would come back someday, so they could pick up where they left off.
Bonnie just sat there, calm and steady, meeting her gaze. Tears rolled down her cheeks, but she barely seemed to notice. She didn't even realize just how much her reply would sting.
Bonnie asked quietly, “Will he?”
Just those two words, like she still held on to some impossible hope. That was exactly what made Helen so scared Bonnie would end up getting hurt all over again.
“He’s married now, he has a kid,” Helen choked out, her voice trembling. “You two can’t go back. There are so many good guys out there. Why torture yourself over one man? If this didn’t work out, I’ll introduce you to someone better, someone with no relationship baggage, okay? Let’s find someone sweet and innocent. Young, handsome, the type who’ll actually care about your feelings…”
Bonnie let out a quiet laugh and patted Helen’s back. “What are you saying? When have I ever said I’d get tangled up with Lawrence again? I’m going on dates, aren’t I? I just haven’t found anyone who feels right.”
Helen paused, realizing that was true. For the longest time, Bonnie had thrown herself into life, staying busy, staying positive.
Helen wiped her tears, finally smiling. “So, let’s get out more, meet new people. Just last week I went to a murder mystery party with Ned. There was a couple there, said they met because they always play those games together. The more friends you make, the more chances you have to meet someone special!”
Bonnie agreed, helping Helen wipe away the streaks her tears left in her eyeshadow, careful and gentle as always.
When Helen looked at her best friend’s pretty, soft face, she let out a quiet sigh. She could say all she wanted, but she knew deep down how hard it really was for Bonnie to start over.
Because Lawrence had been her first love.
He set the bar painfully high. No matter who Bonnie ended up with, it’d be impossible not to compare everything to that first, unforgettable relationship.
Helen couldn’t lie to herself. As an outsider, she knew Lawrence really was special, someone unique among all the men she’d ever met.
