When Monday rolled around, Bonnie told Helen the blind date was a bust.
She didn’t mention all the awkward details, just said that she and Felton weren’t right for each other, and there was no spark.
Helen didn’t think much of it at first. She just assumed they had spent some time together and realized it wasn’t going anywhere. But then, while pretending to work and scrolling through her feed, she stumbled on a post from Felton’s ex from the night before.
She and Felton’s ex had only had dinner once or twice, so they weren’t close, but they’d added each other online anyway.
The post was tagged in Cabinda. The photo? Two hands intertwined, one definitely a guy’s and definitely not Bonnie’s. Just like that, all Helen’s annoyance exploded.
She pushed back from her desk, grabbed her phone, and marched straight to the elevators.
The whole office heard the commotion. Bonnie turned, saw Helen’s angry, retreating figure, and hurried after her.
They both ended up on the building’s rooftop.
The sun was brutal after the rain, but Helen didn’t care. She stood under a patch of shade, phone pressed to her ear, and let Felton have it.
Bonnie tried to step in, but she couldn’t stop Helen. She just stood there, half helpless, half amused.
Honestly, it wasn’t a big deal. Bonnie hadn’t had any feelings for Felton, and she figured blind dates were more like interviews than commitments. People usually went on a few at a time, anyway.
Felton had been upfront. He hadn’t lied or led anyone on, which already put him ahead of most guys.
It took her a while to settle down. When she turned to Bonnie, her eyes were a little red and she looked genuinely sorry. “I’m sorry, Bonnie. I really am. You shouldn’t have to put up with this. I just…”
Bonnie pulled her into a hug before she could even finish. “You don’t ever have to apologize to me. Not ever.”
Helen squeezed her tight, voice shaky. “It’s just… You haven’t dated anyone in years. Now that jerk is back in town, and I’m scared you’ll lose yourself again, just like you did sophomore year…”
Back then, Bonnie was so stubborn. She had come back from the States totally shattered, but her heart wasn’t cold yet. Anything to do with Lawrence could light up her hope again.
Helen had seen her go through it so many times. Bonnie would sit there alone, scrolling through Hannah’s page, torturing herself with every post.
She even argued with Hannah’s crazy fans in the comments, insisting Hannah was the homewrecker. The fans would go after her until Bonnie deleted her account. Then she’d just make a new one and do it all over again. Watching her like that… It made Helen so angry and so sad at the same time.
