Three Years Later, He Came Back Begging novel Chapter 58

Bonnie stepped in, cutting Helen off before she could say another word.

There was really no need to go any further.

Telling Lawrence the truth would only make his guilty conscience worse. That’s not what Bonnie wanted. She didn’t care about seeing him regretful or begging for forgiveness. She wasn’t interested in his apologies or any half-hearted offers to make it up to her.

Honestly, all she wanted was a little distance. The farther, the better.

“What did you want to say?” Bonnie asked. Her eyes stayed cool and steady, like a lake on a windless day, and she looked at him without blinking. “I’m listening.”

Lawrence opened his mouth, but the words just wouldn’t come. It was like he’d forgotten how to speak. He thought of everything he might say, tried to explain, but somehow nothing sounded right.

Helen didn’t look away or move aside. She just rolled her eyes, crossing her arms as if she had all the time in the world. “If you’re about to get emotional with Bonnie, then you can save it. Otherwise, my being here shouldn’t get in the way, right, Mr. Lawrence?”

Lawrence felt a wave of exhaustion wash over him. He lowered his head, looking down into Bonnie’s clear, misty eyes. “Bonnie, I’m sorry.”

She gave him a nod, her face unreadable. It was like she was saying, *Fine, I get it. So what now?*

“You don’t need to quit the Yan Mountain Phase Two project,” Lawrence said, finally giving in. “I won’t interfere anymore. Please… don’t let me mess up your work.”

Bonnie’s lips lifted just a bit, more like a shadow of a smile than the real thing. She didn’t say yes. She didn’t say no.

Back before any of this happened, even before she liked him, Bonnie never treated Lawrence this way. She hadn’t looked at him with this coldness, with a trace of sarcasm in her eyes. She definitely hadn’t shown disgust before.

He felt a sharp, cold ache deep in his chest.

“I was drunk that night. I’m sorry for bothering you.”

“If your stomach hurts, go see a doctor sooner rather than later. Have breakfast, eat a proper lunch and dinner. Don’t just go through the motions. Nothing’s more important than your health.”

He opened his mouth again, wanting to add if she ever needed him, if there was ever anything he could help with, she only had to ask. But the words wouldn’t come out.
