Lawrence knew, deep down, that Bonnie still didn’t believe him. Their fights about Hannah had happened so many times Lawrence had lost track. He couldn’t even be sure how the rumors started, or if it was all just a misunderstanding on Hannah’s part. He remembered picking up Hannah from dance practice, but it was never on purpose—it was just convenient, and his family never thought it necessary to send another driver. He didn’t remember being jealous of Hannah’s dance partners or giving any guy at the studio a dirty look. Back then, all he did was tease Hannah like any kid would.
Then there were all those stories about how he always had to hold Hannah’s hand, how he loved to be close to her, even hug her. And the most absurd thing was Bonnie asking if his first crush or fantasy had been Hannah. Lawrence couldn’t wrap his head around it. Not only was it untrue, but even if it had been, how would Hannah and her friends have known such a private thing?
None of that really mattered, though. What mattered was that Lawrence couldn’t let people keep talking about him in front of Bonnie. That was the first time he’d really lost his temper with Hannah. He’d been harsh, even though most of his anger was directed at her friends, but every word seemed to hurt Hannah anyway. After that, he started to realize Hannah’s feelings toward him were a little too complicated.
So he kept his distance. For a long time, he didn’t dare be alone with her. Later, Hannah came looking for him, eyes red and puffy, apologizing over and over. She said she had no idea her careless words would upset Bonnie so much. She just wanted to get closer to Bonnie, since they’d all be part of the same family one day. She thought sharing stories from when they were kids—things Bonnie didn’t know—would help. Hannah explained that most of those things really had happened, it was just that Lawrence had been too young to remember, and her friends loved to joke around way too much. She promised it wouldn’t happen again.
She was his sister, after all. Lawrence couldn’t stay mad. Besides, recently he and Bonnie had gone back to being sweet with each other, barely arguing at all anymore. So when Hannah suggested the three of them go skiing to patch things up, Lawrence agreed.
