Wren was still holding her phone with Jaxon’s video call active-he’d obviously heard my last comment.

He probably didn’t catch exactly what I’d said on the phone, or maybe he just couldn’t believe it.

His face was dark as storm clouds, glaring at me through the screen.

“Who were you just talking to? What kind of bullshit did you just say?”

His voice still had that arrogant, superior tone he always used.

Wren snapped back to reality too.

She thought Jaxon was still backing her up, figured I was just bluffing.

She got all high and mighty with me again.

Right then, another ringtone started going off through Wren’s phone speaker.

Jaxon’s personal cell was ringing.

On the video, I watched Jaxon glance down at his caller ID.

Just one look and his pupils contracted like he’d been hit.

I saw his hands frantically swipe across his screen-he was taking the call.

He pressed the phone to his ear, totally forgetting about us on the video call.

Through the phone speaker, this authoritative voice came through-even filtered through the call, it carried undeniable power.

“Jaxon.”

It was my dad.

“You getting a little too big for your britches? Messing with my daughter now?”

Jaxon’s body jerked like he’d been electrocuted.

Cold sweat started pouring down his face immediately, and his hands holding the phone began shaking uncontrollably.

He started stammering into the phone:

I walked over to Wren.

She was completely stunned by this sudden turn of events, just standing there like a deer in headlights.
