Chapter 176 Kane’s Blessing

The sky was already dark, and the snow fell thick, glinting like countless shards of broken glass under the cold light.
The abandoned steel mill stood at the far edge of the wasteland, its broken walls and jagged ruins jutting out like the fangs of a giant beast. The wind, laced with rust and icy grit, cut painfully at your ears.
Brianna pressed down on the gas pedal, her palms slick with sweat.
The lone car with its headlights shining in the distance looked like the only ghost light in a sea of darkness, ready to vanish at any second.
Her heart thudded against her chest, so fast it felt like it might burst through her eardrums. With every beat, she silently pleaded, “Please, don’t let anything happen. Please, don’t let anything happen.”
She slammed on the brakes, and before the car had even stopped, she threw open the door and rushed out.
She stumbled in the snow, her knee smashing into jagged shards of ice-pain stabbed through her, but she barely noticed. Half-crawling, half-stumbling, she forced herself toward the beam of headlights.
The car window rolled down slowly, and Kane’s face looked almost deathly pale in the dim yellow glow. The smile at the corner of his mouth was as cold and lifeless as frozen blood.
“The child is in the back,” Kane said.
Those words sent a jolt through Brianna, making her shudder to the core.
She flung open the car door in a frenzy, barely thinking.
In the back seat, Kendra was curled up into a tiny ball, bundled in Kane’s coat. Her cheeks were rosy from heater, and she was fast asleep, looking completely at peace.
“Kendra!” Brianna bent over, her voice shaking uncontrollably. Her hand hovered over Kendra’s face, afraid to press too hard. “Wake up, sweetheart, it’s Mommy…”
Kendra blinked sleepily, confused for a second, then launched herself at Brianna, wrapping her tiny arms around her neck in a fierce hug. “Mommy!”
That cry of “Mommy” shattered Brianna. Her last bit of composure snapped in an instant.
All her fear, regret, and guilt burst forth, flooding out like a broken dam.
She fell to her knees in the snow, cradling her daughter tightly. Her burning tears rained down, melting the frost on Kendra’s cold collar in a heartbeat.
“Are you hurt anywhere? Tell me…” Brianna’s voice was barely more than a whisper, trembling as her hands frantically checked Kendra’s forehead, wrists, ankles-her heart squeezed with worry at every little bump or bruise she found.

“No.” Kendra shook her head, reaching up with her tiny hand to wipe away Brianna’s tears. Her little voice wa firm, even though it was still childish. “Kane saved me. He made the bad guys run away.”
Only then did Brianna look up, her vision swimming with tears as she peered through the haze toward the driver’s seat.
Kane leaned back in the seat, his lips so pale they were nearly translucent. He managed a faint, weak smile, as if to let her know he was still alive.
Snow fell, instantly blanketing his shoulders, like a shroud of death settling over him.
Brianna’s heart lurched. She quickly placed Kendra into Patsy’s arms, then rushed over to check on Kane.
The moment her eyes landed on him, a chill exploded down her spine.
Kane’s eyes were sunken, his lips and cheeks deathly pale, as if every last drop of blood had been drained from him.
Blood was gushing between his fingers as he clutched his abdomen, his sweater already drenched in a spreading, dark red bloom.
“So, do you finally believe I love you?” Kane forced a weak smile, his voice soft as falling snow, but it struck Brianna right in the heart.
Brianna panicked, yanking open the car door and reaching for him. “How could you be so foolish? Hold on, I’m taking you to the hospital.”
Kane shook his head, the pads of his fingers barely brushing across her face, leaving haunting streaks of blood behind. “If I hadn’t been waiting for you, I wouldn’t have lasted this long.”
His cold fingertips skimmed over her tear-stained cheeks, as if bidding her farewell for the last time.
He looked at the streaks of blood on her face, a childlike satisfaction shining in his eyes. “In the next life me find you sooner, okay?”
Brianna’s tears streamed uncontrollably as she gripped Kane’s hand, desperately holding onto its fading warmth. Her voice shook as she begged, “Kane, nothing can happen to you. I won’t allow it!”
In the distance, police sirens pierced the snowy night, red and blue lights strobing across the snow.
The cops and Brandon pulled up nearly together, with the ambulance right on their heels. Paramedics sprinted over with a stretcher, hustling Kane into the ambulance.
Brianna stumbled after them, but Brandon grabbed her arm, stopping her. “Let me do it.”
His voice was hoarse, but he left no room for refusal.

After dropping Kendra off at her grandmother’s house, Brianna didn’t stop for a moment before heading to the hospital.
The morgue lights were icy white. Brianna stumbled in, every step stabbing at her heart.
The cold steel slab shone with a dull, ghostly glow. Kane lay there, covered by a sheet as cold and lifeless as the steel beneath him.
She froze, like a hammer had slammed into her chest-her breath vanished instantly.
“He was stabbed seven times in the abdomen. He was already gone before they even got him to the hospital…” Brandon’s voice sounded far away, hoarse and raw, like he’d swallowed sandpaper.
‘Seven stabs. How much must that have hurt?’ Brianna thought.
Brianna opened her mouth, but no sound came out. Tears spilled down her cheeks first, so hot they felt like they could burn right through her skin.
Suddenly, a gut-wrenching sob erupted from just outside the door.
Kane’s parents were ushered in, leaning on others for support. As soon as the sheet was lifted, Kane’s mother collapsed right there.
His father’s trembling hand shakily touched Kane’s pale, lifeless forehead, and he choked out a shattered, grief-stricken moan. “Kane…”
That cry felt like someone smashing a hammer right into Brianna’s bones.
Brianna couldn’t take it anymore. She turned her face away, her nails digging deep into her palms.
She almost wished Kane’s mother would suddenly jump up, slap her twice across the face, point at her and yell, “You’re the one who killed my son!”
But Kane’s mother was so lost in her grief that even the strength to hate had been drained away by sorrow.
After a long moment, Kane’s father steadied himself against the wall, his eyes bloodshot as he looked at Brianna and Brandon. His voice was rough, but still held a gentle dignity.
“Thank you… for seeing my son off on his last journey,” he said.
That simple “thank you” was sharper than any blame, slicing right through Brianna’s heart.
She opened her mouth, but the words “I’m sorry” stuck in her throat. No matter how hard she tried, she just couldn’t say it.

“Please, don’t say that, Mr. Flynn, Brandon said apologetically. “If Kane hadn’t stepped in to save my daughter, none of this would have happened.”
The Flynn family decided to bring Kane’s body back to Seavale for a memorial service before cremation.
Brandon chartered a private jet, personally handled all the police paperwork, and took care of every detail— from the funeral and vigil to the commendation for bravery-barely sleeping, barely resting.
Except for Josefina, the entire Levy family went to Seavale to attend Kane’s funeral. Brandon quietly called off the takeover of the Flynn Group.
Brianna felt like she was sleepwalking through a fog, half hoping this was all just a bad dream. If only she could wake up and find Kane still out there somewhere, smiling that warm, dazzling smile-just out of sight, but still alive.
It wasn’t until the night before the cremation that Kane’s father came to see her again.
In just a few days, his hair had turned almost completely white, but he still managed to keep his composure.
“Kane called me before he passed,” his voice trembled. “He said… he wanted his ashes made into a memoria’ diamond, set into a piece of jewelry, and given to you.”
Brianna’s fingers shook, and her tears poured down like rain.
She nodded, her voice barely more than a whisper, shattered by grief. “Alright… I’ll draw up the design myself.”
‘Kane, how could I ever be worthy of your love? And how am I supposed to repay you for such overwhelming devotion?’ Brianna’s heart ached with regret and longing.
A month later, at Seavale Cemetery, the morning sun streamed through the pine and cypress, making the heart-shaped brooch sparkle-crystal-clear, like a single tear caught and frozen.
Brianna bent down, pressing the brooch gently against the photo on the tombstone. Her fingers brushed over the dried smile, lingering for a moment.
“Kane,” Brianna murmured, her voice soft as the wind, “stay with me as I go to Valeentia. Now, it’s my turn to protect you, for eternity.”
The brooch sparkled in the morning light, scattering tiny sparks as if he were smiling at her. From that day on, her chest would forever hold a heart that would never beat again.

The fireworks outside kept crackling, but their sound felt muffled and far away, as if blocked by a thick layer of frosted glass.
With Kane gone, any sound of celebration from the Levy and Harper families felt disrespectful to his memory.
The Levy family canceled their grand reunion dinner, leaving just the most basic private New Year’s greetings for Josefina.
The entire old mansion was trapped under an invisible, oppressive mood.
On the first day of the New Year, a bleak blanket of snow covered everything, casting the world in a cold, desolate haze.
Brianna helped Caroline over the threshold. The two elderly ladies nestled by the fireplace, holding hands and murmuring quietly to each other.
Brianna sat off to the side, her eyes drifting over the icy patterns on the window, hollow and exhausted. She knew deep down that there was no hope for happiness this New Year.
That afternoon, Brandon walked in hand-in-hand with Kendra.
Kendra was bundled up in a snowy white puffer coat, soft and cuddly like a little cotton ball, but her innocence couldn’t lift the shadow from the adults’ eyes.
Brianna glanced up and locked eyes with Brandon. For a brief moment, they both recognized the brokenness buried deep within each other.
There was no tension, no icy distance-just the numbness and fatigue that lingered after loss had swept through them.
Brandon sat down next to Brianna, his head lowered as he peeled the orange with such careful, almost humble movements, like he was afraid to break it. He gently placed each shiny segment into her hand, one after another.
“Go ahead, it’s super sweet,” he said.
Brianna took the orange and whispered a quiet thanks. The sweetness bloomed on her tongue, but all she felt was a wave of bitterness in her heart.
Josefina watched the scene, her face lighting up with a proud, gentle smile.
“Look at Brandon, finally learning how to take care of someone. Brandon’s a considerate guy now, isn’t he?” Josefina teased.
Brandon’s ears flushed red at his grandmother’s teasing.
“Caroline, you really have to try the chef’s cooking here,” Brandon said, standing up. “I’ll have the chef prepare a couple of their best dishes for you. Why not stay for dinner tonight?”

Josefina watched Brandon’s embarrassed expression and couldn’t help but smile with pride. She asked tentatively, “Brianna, when are you and Brandon going to remarry? Caroline and I are still hoping to welcom another great-grandchild into the family.”
Brianna lowered her eyes, quietly spinning the fruit knife as she peeled the apple, the skin curling into a thir unbroken ribbon. She looked up, her smile calm and serene. “Josefina, after the New Year, I’m going to Valeentia.”
Josefina’s smile froze, and the atmosphere instantly turned heavy.
“What couple doesn’t run into problems?” Josefina said, holding Brianna’s hand tightly. “That kind of forever together love only in poetry.

“Wow, you’re so generous!” Brandon looked at his daughter with a wounded expression. ‘My little girl was supposed to keep me warm, but now she’s letting the chill in, he thought.
“Kendra, listen to me. If your mom takes you to Valeentia, we’ll never be together as a family again,” Brandon said, his voice firm.
A hint of sadness flashed across Kendra’s face, and she didn’t say anything.
“Do you want your mom and dad to be apart forever?” Brandon asked, not letting go.
Kendra lowered her head and shook it softly.
Seeing Kendra like this, Brandon felt a pang of guilt, but he knew this might be his last chance.
“I have a way to bring our family back together. Would you be willing to help me?” he asked.

The official seals of Unity Group and the Pratt Group slammed down at the same time, the contract pages flashing with a cold sheen.
Brianna picked up her pen and signed her name next to “Chairman” in a single stroke, without hesitation.
The Horizon Group’s seal was then pushed in front of Patsy. Brianna said in a cool tone, “From now on, you call the shots.”
Within a month, she handled everything swiftly and decisively-shares, records, personnel, legal matters, all settled without a hitch.
The sound of fireworks still lingered in the air, but her suitcase was already standing quietly by the front door, her passport slipped into her pocket, ready to go whenever she needed.
In the days that followed, she squeezed every bit of time she had-playing with Kendra at the amusement park until closing, soaking up the sun with Caroline in the yard, and listening as Caroline retold those old stories for the hundredth time.
At night, after tucking Kendra in, Brianna sat alone by the bed, checking her flight information again and again, as if trying to convince herself she could really go through with it.
It wasn’t until three nights before her departure that she finally sent a WhatsApp message to her two childhood friends: [Tomorrow at 7 PM, same old spot.]
They’d arranged to meet at a hot pot place, and the whole restaurant was thick with steam.
After three bottles of red wine, Patsy was the first to raise her glass, her cheeks flushed. “Brianna, here’s to a brilliant future ahead of you.”
Tristan didn’t raise his glass. Instead, he just rolled up his sleeves to his elbows and kept cooking meat for the two of them.
In the steamy air, Tristan smiled softly, his eyes crinkling, like he was truly happy for her, but also doing his best to bury his loneliness where no one could see.
Brianna watched Tristan closely. There was no pressure, no sign he wanted her to stay. If anything, there was even a little smile in his eyes.
She quietly breathed a sigh of relief, but a strange sadness crept in.
Aside from Caroline and Kendra, the hardest thing to leave behind was his smile.
Tristan had done so much for her, but all she could give back were “thank you” and “I’m sorry.” His feelings for her ran so deep that she couldn’t accept them, but she couldn’t turn them away either.
Brianna raised her glass toward Tristan, her voice softened by the steam. “Tristan, I’m leaving. Promise me you’ll take care of yourself, okay?”
Their glasses clinked gently. Tristan chuckled softly, then tipped his head back and drained his drink. “Don’t

It was not like she’d never come back. Planes make it easy-just means they’ll see each other less. No need to act like it was some tragic farewell.
After a few rounds, everyone was feeling the buzz.
The driver pulled up outside the Harper family’s ornate gate, the icy wind howling and swirling snowflakes a around.
Tristan stumbled out and opened the door for Brianna, grinning like a playful kid. Brianna stepped out, her heels unsteady as she touched down, nearly losing her balance. The mix of booze and perfume exploded intc the chilly night air.
She reached up to straighten Tristan’s collar, her fingertips icy. “Tristan, promise me you’ll be okay, alright?”
“I will,” Tristan replied, pulling her close, his hand burning against her waist. His eyes grew misty. “I swear I’ll never let you slip away again.”
Before he could finish, he leaned in, his breath hot and heavy with the burn of alcohol, just inches from her lips.
Suddenly, a person swept across the scene.
Brandon, like a bolt of lightning out of the darkness, seized Tristan by the collar and yanked him away with force.
Tristan slipped and crashed hard into the snow, sending a spray of icy crystals flying.
Brianna stumbled too, her shoulder slamming into a solid chest. Brandon caught her with one arm and smoothly pulled her behind him, all in one fluid motion.
“Mr. Pratt.” Brandon’s voice dropped to a dangerous whisper, every word sharp as ice. “Is that what passes for a gentleman, taking advantage when someone’s down?”
Tristan pushed himself up, the cold wind sobering him a bit, defiance blazing in his eyes. “And what gives you the right to stop me?”
He lunged, fist barely raised, but Brandon stepped right in, the air snapping tight, ready to explode.
“Enough!” Brianna grabbed Brandon’s sleeve, her knuckles white from the grip. “Wasn’t the last fight enough for you two?”
The driver rushed over and clamped down on Tristan’s arm, holding him back. They were finally dragged apart, their ragged breaths loud in the snowy night.
shook off the driver and casually straightened his rumpled coat.
You should head home,” Brianna said, her voice gentle and soothing.

Still fuming, Tristan climbed into the car, clearly reluctant. He rolled down the window, gave Brandon a roguish grin and raised an eyebrow. “Catch you later.
The car roared off into the night, its taillights leaving a streak of crimson lingering in the darkness.
It wasn’t until the taillights disappeared into the night that Brianna finally turned to Brandon, her impatien and anger clear in her voice. “What are you doing here?”
Snow fell between them, the silence so deep you could hear a heartbeat.
Brandon didn’t answer. He locked his gaze on her, his eyes like a wild animal caught in a trap-pain, despai and that fierce stubbornness that wouldn’t let him back down.
After a long silence, Brandon’s voice came out rough and low. “Do you really hate me that much?
His words hit Brianna like a punch to the heart.
She froze, her parents’ bitter, resentful faces flashing through her mind. She’d sworn she’d never let her marriage turn into a living hell.
Now, facing his bloodshot eyes, she suddenly felt drained. She took a deep breath, swallowing her anger. “What are you doing here so late?”
Her voice softened, but it was even more ruthless than shouting because it meant she couldn’t even bother to hate him anymore.
Brandon swallowed hard, his Adam’s apple bobbing like he was choking on shards of glass.
The snowlight washed over his pale face as he finally managed to speak. “Can we try again? Please, just give u another shot.”
The air seemed to freeze in place.
Brianna’s eyes flickered, stunned, but before she could react, Brandon pulled her into his arms, his voice shaking, barely holding together. “I can’t live without you. Back then, I was stupid. I took you for granted… Just give me one more chance, please?”
She could feel his warmth even through the thick coat-so hot, so familiar, the kind of comfort she’d once longed for on countless sleepless nights. But now, it meant nothing to her anymore.
Brianna broke free from his arms and took a step back.
Brandon, desperate as if grasping at his last hope, pulled a velvet box from his pocket. “The ring I proposed with-you turned it into a necklace for Kendra.”
Then, he dropped to one knee, humbly opened the box, and held up the diamond. “Brianna, will you marry me again? Please, don’t leave me.”
The massive diamond in the velvet box glittered fiercely against the snowy backdrop.
Snowflakes landed on his shoulders, melting instantly, like silent tears.
