Liliana didn't know how she managed to walk to the door of the hospital room.
The day was bright and sunny, and the warm light streamed into the room, blanketing everything it touched.
She peeked through the small window on the door and saw a man quietly propped up in the hospital bed inside.
Matthew had a gentle expression as he looked down at the book in his hands.
He was still wrapped in bandages, a sign that his injuries hadn't fully healed. The bright sunlight enveloped him in a hazy glow, making him look almost unreal.
Liliana froze, her lips trembling as her fingers suddenly clenched into a tight fist.
She felt as if she'd lost her voice, rooted to the spot, unsure how to react.
Matthew was alive?
He was really alive?
Right in front of her, alive and well.
But Linton…
Suddenly, Liliana couldn't take it anymore.
She felt herself starting to break down. She didn't know if she should be happy that Matthew was alive, or if she should be…
She took a stiff step back, her hands and feet turning ice-cold. Her eyes remained fixed on the gentle, handsome man in the room. She covered her mouth with a trembling hand, and finally, her eyes reddened with tears.
Gabriel stepped forward and held her. He sighed softly and asked, "Liliana…"
"Do you want to go in and see him?"
Liliana was silent.
She was suddenly afraid, though she didn't know what she was afraid of.
After a long moment, she said in a hoarse voice, "Gabriel."
"You must… have a lot of questions for me, don't you?"
Her long lashes trembled. After a long silence, she finally asked in a hoarse voice, "Why…"
She sounded lost.
Matthew reached out and gently ruffled her hair. In the sunlight, his expression was incredibly gentle and kind, like a considerate older brother.
He lowered his eyes, thought for a moment, and said softly, "Your brother told me everything… about what happened in Crownport, and about Linton."
"Liliana, I'm sorry. I never imagined that my death would have such a huge impact on you, or that it would affect your relationship with Linton."
A deep sense of guilt crossed Matthew's handsome, refined face. "I'm sorry. I never meant to intrude on your life with Linton."
"My original plan was to take this lucky escape and live out the rest of my days quietly in this remote town in Solmere City, to have the peaceful life I always wanted."
Matthew slowly looked up, his gaze directed forward. His voice was as soothing as a mountain spring, warm and pleasant to the ear.
