The hotel's shuttle was already waiting outside. The driver checked the list and came over to help them load up their suitcases in the trunk.
Sophia and Annabelle got into the car.
Annabelle yawned. "Finally made it to Haisburg. But seriously, it's so much hotter here than in Jelasburg."
Even though it was already evening, the air was still thick with heat.
Honestly, coming to Haisburg for vacation right now?
Not exactly our smartest idea.
The driver finished loading the suitcases and got into the car, just as Annabelle was commenting on how much hotter Haisburg was compared to Jelasburg.
"You two ladies from Jelasburg?" he asked
Annabelle gave him a quick look-he seemed like a nice guy-so she struck up a conversation.
"Yeah, summer's just starting back home, but it's not nearly this hot yet. Sir, do you know any great places to eat or fun things to do in Haisburg? Mind sharing a few recommendations?"
The driver turned out to be super chatty, happily sharing the local foodie hotspots and all the most popular hangout spots in Haisburg.
"Are you guys part of the working class?" the driver asked
Annabelle casually replied, "We're part of the gig economy."
The subtext was "they were pretty broke."
The driver laughed. "Well, in that case, you'll be able to hit up all the cool spots in Haisburg—no place is off-limits for folks like you."
Sophia perked up, sensing something fishy. "Wait, are there places we're not supposed to go?"
"Oh, for sure," the driver said with a grin. "There's a tourist spot around here that locals avoid like the plague."
Annabelle's interest was hooked right away. "Which place is that?"
"The End of the World," the driver answered.
Annabelle looked confused. "Why? What's the deal with that place? Some kind of story or legend?"
"It's bad luck," the driver replied
Even Sophia was interested now. "Wait, isn't it just a big rock? How's that unlucky, anyway?"
The driver went on, "Think about the name—it's like the edge of the sky and the very end of the sea: Pretty dramatic, huh?"
Annabelle and Sophia exchanged a glance-they both knew what the phrase meant.
"But what's that got to do with the place itself?" Sophia asked.
"People around here really have their own superstitions, the driver explained. "They say if a couple visits that spot, it means their relationship's at its end. If you're in government, your career's finished And if you're working a regular job, forget about ever getting promoted."
Annabelle blurted out, "No way—is it really that superstitious?"
"Better safe than sorry," the driver said, leaving it at that.
Sophia and Annabelle exchanged a look, silently crossing The End of the World off their itinerary.
They were down-to-earth, not about to mess with bad luck
Since the locals had warned them, they figured it was better not to tempt fate.
After all, whether it was about romance or making money, nobody wants trouble in either department.
Forty minutes later, the car pulled up to the Hilton Hotel and stopped by the revolving doors.
The doorman hurried over to help with their luggage, and Annabelle and Sophia said goodbye to the driver before getting out.
The doorman took their suitcases and led them into the lobby to check in.
Meanwhile, back in Jelasburg.
Lucas had indulged himself after a wild night and didn't wake up until late afternoon. He sat up groggily and grabbed his phone to check the time.
"Four in the afternoon? Seriously, did I really sleep that long? he thought, still half-asleep.
He grabbed his suit, slipped on his shoes, and headed out.
As soon as he opened the door, he saw Emily standing outside, her eyes red and swollen, looking at him with a mix of hurt and resentment.
Lucas frowned, "What are you doing here?"
Emily had obviously been crying, her voice choked and nasal. "Why would you treat me this way, Lucas?
Didn't you say I was the only one you loved?"
Lucas was fed up and headed for the door, not saying a word
Confrontation was the last thing he wanted, but Emily wasn't about to let him walk out that easily.
"No way am I letting this slide!' Emily fumed to herself, totally unwilling to just accept it.
She needed to know exactly who that woman with Lucas was last night. Nobody was going to snatch Lucas away from her.
She grabbed her phone and made a call. "I need you to check out which women have been seen around Lucas lately.
By the third day of their trip in Haisburg, Sophia and Annabelle were in full vacation mode-eating to their hearts content, playing like crazy, and leaving all their worries behind.
They checked out a couple of tourist spots, but nothing really wowed them, so they just lounged around at the hotel instead
During the blazing afternoons, they'd drive out exploring different streets for tasty food, and as evening fell, they'd sprawl out on the private beach, enjoying the cool sea breeze.
While they were having a blast, Erica spotted Annabelle's post on social media. Turns out she was in Haisburg too, so she called them up and invited them out for some fun.
Annabelle and Sophia quickly freshened up, threw on their spaghetti strap dresses and sandals, and headed out to the lounge.
Erica came downstairs to meet them.
The club dripped with gold and luxury, its decadent atmosphere practically buzzing-a total playground for the city's elite and night owls.
Erica grinned, "This is Haisburg's most famous club.
The guys here? Off-the-charts handsome, bodies sculpted to perfection-think V-cut abs, tight waists— honestly, they're so insanely hot it's almost criminal!"
Annabelle's eyes crinkled with laughter. "Seriously, you re my soul sister from another mister. How do you always read my mind?"
"Let's go! I already had the lady boss round up all the club's top-tier hotties-the most drop-dead gorgeous, most ripped guys—in our private room. Tonight, were
going all out and living it up!* Erica said, eyes shining
Sophia just stood there, at a total loss for words.
"Should I just make a run for it?' Sophia thought, suddenly feeling the urge to bail
"Is this really the kind of wild party a so-called respectable girl like me is supposed to show up at?
Sophia mentally groaned, already way out of her comfort zone.
Noticing Sophia was ready to make a run for it, Erica and Annabelle each linked arms with her from either side, making sure she couldn't slip away.
"Come on, let's roll! Tonight, nobody leaves sober!"
Erica laughed, tugging Sophia along.
