But this played right into Mira's hands.
"And what if we've already destroyed his entire empire?"
"Destroyed it? You ruined my inheritance?
Kill them all!"
The woman flew into a genuine rage, turning to her men and waving her hand.
But in the very next second, every single thug behind her—along with the woman herself—collapsed to the ground.
"Anyone wounded, come get treated! The rest of you, secure the hostiles," Master Ellis shouted.
Despite a dozen injuries from the fierce shootout, they hadn't suffered a single casualty. A small mercy.
The bullet in Owen's arm was lodged against the bone. He had applied a makeshift dressing, but the delay had cost him a significant amount of blood.
It wasn't safe to perform surgery out here, so Mira reapplied a heavy dose of coagulant.
The other soldiers fashioned crude stretchers out of tree branches for those with leg wounds, and the group hastily began their trek back.
"Owen, get on my back," Mira insisted, noticing his sudden pallor. He had taken that bullet for her.
Seeing the raw concern in her eyes, Owen decided the gunshot was entirely worth it.
He was about to say, "I'm fine."
He was a grown man; a little flesh wound was nothing.
But then he reconsidered. Basking in his lady's affection felt pretty damn good.
"It's nothing, my lady. I... I can handle it."
Master Ellis saw right through him, shooting him a withering glare. "Oh, give it a rest. Stop acting. Do you enjoy making Mira worry?"
"Who's acting? It actually hurts. You're not the one bleeding, Master, so of course you don't feel it," Owen protested, feigning misery.
"Still keeping up the act? I'll give you a real reason to cry."
