“Fiona, he's completely heartless! He has no conscience! Oh god...”
Lacey tried to throw herself into Fiona's arms. Mara reached out to block her, but Fiona stopped her with a subtle look.
Playing the part of a supportive friend, Fiona embraced her. “You really did get the short end of the stick. But since Adrian doesn't love you anymore, dragging this out won't do you any good. Just sign it. If you sign it now, you might still walk away with a little something.”
Fiona advised, her voice dripping with artificial sympathy.
“Walk away with a little something? I am the eldest daughter of the Quinn family and a primary shareholder in the Mercer Group! Why would I ever need to beg Adrian Mercer for scraps?”
Lacey was absolutely furious.
“But didn't you sever ties with your maiden family years ago? Does flaunting your status as a Quinn daughter really hold any weight anymore?”
Fiona felt compelled to point out the harsh reality.
“I...” Lacey choked on her words.
Fiona delivered another ruthless reminder. “And as for being a corporate shareholder... do you even have any equity left?”
“Equity?” Lacey went pale, stunned into silence again.
“Exactly. Did you even stop to think about where your shares are? Let me refresh your memory. Didn't you hand them over to your pathetic, bankrupt son to use as loan collateral?”
“But Damon said...”
“Did your beloved son tell you that he'd redeem the equity and return it to you once his cash flow improved and his entertainment agency turned a profit?”
Fiona stared directly into Lacey's terrified eyes. “My dear, foolish friend. Did it never cross your mind what would happen if his cash flow didn't improve? What if his agency kept hemorrhaging money? Once those shares were mortgaged, did you honestly believe they still belonged to you?”
“No, that's impossible. Damon's entertainment agency wouldn't just keep losing money! The company's financials are bound to bounce back.”
Lacey refused to believe that the corporate situation had deteriorated to such a catastrophic level.
“Ding ding ding. You guessed it. Mara is my biological daughter with Adrian,” Fiona beamed, looking like the cat that got the cream.
All the strength vanished from Lacey's body, and she collapsed to the floor. “So... you and Adrian have been together this whole time? You've just been putting on a show for me?”
“Correct again.” Fiona glanced down at the broken woman, the triumphant smirk never leaving her lips.
“How... how could you do this to me? When you couldn't afford school and were starving in the streets, I was the one who helped you! I gave you a job at my company! I brought you into the Mercer Group! Is this how you repay me?!”
“Don't act like some noble saint. You only helped me because I was useful to you. Otherwise, with all the beggars on the street, why didn't you go play savior to them?”
“How... how could you say something like that to me?”
Lacey couldn't believe her ears. What kind of venomous, ungrateful snake had she been nurturing all these years?
“I'm with Adrian because I love him. What's wrong with a woman fighting for her own true love?”
