"Why are you two here at this hour?"
"You heartless girl! We heard about the plane..."
"Liora Bennett! I bought you both gifts. Do you want them or not?"
The two girls froze in their tracks.
Mira pressed an index finger to her lips. "Shh!"
She cast a quick glance toward the interior of the house and lowered her voice. "Don't let Rachel know. She'll lose sleep over this and never let me travel again. Come on, let's go for a walk outside."
Turning back toward the balcony where Rachel was tending to her potted plants, Mira called out, "Rachel, we're going out for a bit! Make enough dinner for two extra people tonight."
"What do you girls want to eat?" Rachel asked.
"Keep it simple, anything is fine," Celine Ward replied.
"Just heat up the roast chicken I brought back," Mira added. "Make some hearty soup and a few vegetable sides. That'll be perfect."
The three of them strolled down the tree-lined avenue before Liora finally opened the floodgates. "Why do I feel like Rachel is more of a mother to you than your actual mom?"
"She practically raised me," Mira replied.
Celine chimed in, "Who else could be as twisted as the Mercer family anyway?"
"Mira, what really happened on that flight?"
"Pretty much what you heard on the news. Luckily, my friend had flight training. He took over the controls and managed to land us safely."
The complete truth was something she couldn't afford to share with them just yet.
"That's terrifying. I am never getting on a plane again," Liora said, shivering dramatically.
"Don't be like that. The chances of a plane crash are incredibly low," Mira reasoned, trying to soothe her nerves. This was exactly why major incidents like this made the general public so paranoid.
