Too Pretty to Be Your Backup novel Chapter 77

Travis came back fast, long legs practically crossing the doorway in one step. “Did Chad text you?”

“No,” Amanda said, showing him her phone.

After Chad sent her that photo, she’d messaged him a bunch of times—nothing. She’d even tried calling, but he didn’t pick up. She called his number directly, but it went straight to voicemail. Phone off.

She looked at Travis, worry in her voice. “Did you check? Do you know where Chad is?”

Travis' handsome face was blank, but he didn’t say anything.

It was obvious. He’d tried, but Chad was hiding too well. No one could find him.

Amanda watched him, not sure what to say. She honestly couldn’t figure out why Chad would kidnap Leila. There was no way he’d do it to threaten her. That would be pointless. With the way things were between her and Leila, she’d almost be the first to tell him to just get rid of the hostage.

And judging by Chad’s actions, it really seemed like he’d hit rock bottom.

She looked at Travis, curiosity getting the best of her. “Did you do something to Chad?”

Travis' eyes landed on her, calm as ever, but something about the way he looked at her made her skin crawl.

“You didn’t go after Chad for me, did you? Tell me you didn’t. Don’t you dare pin Leila’s kidnapping on me. I didn’t do anything, and I definitely didn’t ask you to.”

Amanda felt like she was about to lose it. How did this turn into her problem? She hadn’t done a thing. She hadn’t even asked Travis for help.

Travis stared at her, taking in the way she was practically begging to be left out of it, and let out a sigh.

Travis studied her, his voice low. “I stopped sending you gifts for so long. Didn’t you think that was weird? Why didn’t you ask?”

Amanda rolled her eyes. “Ask what? You stopped giving me stuff. I’m supposed to go beg you for presents?” She muttered under her breath, “Not like I even like what you send. Who cares if you do or not.”

Travis just stared at her, wordless.

“My bad,” he said finally.

Amanda jumped in right away, “Exactly! Leila getting kidnapped is your fault, not mine. Don’t even think about blaming me. I had nothing to do with any of this.”

She needed to make that totally clear. Travis cared about Leila so much. If Chad, in his desperation, actually did something to her, Amanda hoped Travis wouldn’t try to blame it on herself. None of this was her fault. Travis was loaded—why did he have to push Chad so hard? Well, now he’d gotten his wish. Leila was abducted.
