They thought being recognized made sense.

Another waitress’s eyes were red, like she’d been crying. “Right. They look so glamorous on the outside, but their hearts are black. Just thinking about that little dog’s legs being broken slowly… it breaks my heart. I can’t get its innocent eyes out of my head.”

When Clara and Michelle reached the banquet hall entrance, two maids hurried over.

Their eyes held hidden disgust. “Ms. Tucker, Ms. Miller, you’re finally back. Your parents were looking for you just now.”

Michelle frowned. “Why were they looking for us?

“Probably to talk about your engagement date with Jose,” she said optimistically, still grinning.

Clara blushed on cue, putting on a shy act. “Michelle, don’t say that. It’s embarrassing.”

But inside, she was screaming with joy.

I’m getting engaged to Jose again! I’m gonna be the happiest bride ever in the whole world!

Lost in their own thoughts, both wore big smiles as they stepped into the hall.

“There they are.”

“I never would’ve guessed they’re like this.”

“Me neither. How can someone be this cruel?”

“I heard Clara’s famous for rescuing strays. I always thought she was kind and beautiful. Turns out she’s a

monster.”

Murmurs flooded their ears as soon as they walked in.

Clara and Michelle exchanged confused looks.

Why is everyone staring at us? We aren’t even in our fancy gowns today. Do people really like this whole “poor victim”

look on us that much?

Even if it felt weird, they shrugged it off. Being the center of everyone’s attention made them swell with pride-they were secretly over the moon.

They were gonna be top-tier stars someday-adored by millions. Just thinking about it made their hearts race. They couldn’t wait to debut and become showbiz icons.

Clara and Michelle finally sensed something was wrong. The air felt thick with tension. Their smiles faded.

“You unfilial brat!” Matthew roared.

“Michelle, you’ve shamed the entire Miller family!” Gerald snapped.

Two loud smacks echoed through the hall.

Clara and Michelle froze, their cheeks burning with pain.

Tears instantly filled Clara’s eyes. She looked helpless and wronged. “Dad… what did I do wrong?”

Michelle, though, was used to getting her way. This was the first time her dad had hit her-especially in front of everyone. She exploded.

“Dad! Why’d you hit me? I didn’t do anything!” She wailed, clutching her cheek.

“Still lying!” Gerald’s anger flared at her defiance.

He slapped her again and again-hard. Michelle staggered, dizzy from the blows.

“It hurts! Stop!” She screamed, no longer caring about her image.

Matthew showed no mercy either. He landed several sharp slaps across Clara’s face in quick succession.

Her cheek-already swollen from Margaret’s hit the night before took another beating. The pain was so intense, her face went numb.

“You two idiots! Look at what you’ve done!” Matthew snarled. “See for yourselves!”

Dizzy and confused, Clara and Michelle turned toward the hall windows.

Not far from the hotel stood a skyscraper, with a giant screen mounted on its facade. This was the most prominent and high-traffic billboard in Capaville.
