CHAPTER 76: WHO TO TRUST?-2
He still hasn’t gotten back to me about what Logan’s people were looking for in the penthouse.

Twenty–four hours, he asked for. But why wouldn’t he want Knox to know? Why lie about the door? What
does he know?
What if Knox’s most trusted people aren’t who he believes them to be?
My heart pounds at the thought.
I don’t know how Knox would react if I told him. I don’t know if I could stop him from doing something that
can’t be undone.
The questions spiral, each one spawning three more, until my head is pounding and the walls feel like
they’re closing in.
I push off the wall and start walking, desperate for air, for space, for something that isn’t this suffocating
uncertainty-
And walk directly into a wall of expensive fabric and warm muscle.
“Careful, little flame.”
Hands catch my elbows, steadying me, and I look up into gray eyes that crinkle with amusement.
Rafael Montenegro.
Of course. Ofcoursehe’s here. The man is everywhere, materializing in corridors and doorways like he has some supernatural ability to appear exactly where Vleast want him.
“Rafael.” I step back, putting distance between us. “Sorry. I wasn’t watching where I was going.”
“Clearly.” His smile is slow, unhurried. “Though I can’t say I mind being run into by beautiful women. It’s one of life’s small pleasures.”
I should keep walking. I should make my excuses and leave before this becomes anything more than an
awkward collision in a hallway.
But he helped me. During the trial, when everything was falling apart, he brought Dr. Moreau’s testimony
and turned the tide in our favor. I never thanked him for that.
“I’m glad I ran into you, actually.” The words feel strange in my mouth, but I push through. “I never got to
thank you for Dr. Moreau. For what you did during the trial.”
Something shifts in his expression – surprise, maybe, or curiosity. Like he wasn’t expecting gratitude.
“You don’t need to thank me.”
“I do.” I force myself to hold his gaze even though every instinct is screaming at me to look away. “Her testimony made a difference. A real difference. She’s the reason I’m still here now. I don’t know if we

would have won without it, and I…” I swallow. “It meant a lot. That you did that. So. Thank you.”
The silence stretches between us, weighted with something I can’t quite name.
Rafael tilts his head, studying me with an intensity that makes my skin prickle. The charming mask is still in place, but there’s something flickering under it.
Something that looks almost…
“You’re welcome,” he says finally. “Though I admit, my motives weren’t entirely altruistic.”
“I know. You wanted to piss off Knox.”
“That was a bonus.” His smile sharpens. “But not the primary goal.”
Before I can ask what he means, something changes in his posture. The easy charm tightens into something harder.
His eyes drop to my lips, then back up, and when he speaks again, his voice has lost its playful edge.
