CHAPTER 37 NECKLACE FROM YOUR SPINE

CHAPTER 97: A NECKLACE FROM YOUR SPINE

KNOX’S POV

Go to the car,I tell Ember quietly. I’ll be right behind you.

She looks like she wants to argue, but something in my expression must convince her not to. She nods, squeezes my hand once, and walks toward the exit.

I watch her go, making sure she’s safely out of the building before I turn my attention back to the room.

Harrison is gathering his things, preparing to leave. Devika has reappeared from wherever she was hiding, looking disheveled and furious.

Maurice is nowhere to be seen probably fled into

And Logan is still standing there. Staring. Shaking.

ht to drink himself into oblivion.

I wait until the others have dispersed, until the room is empty for the two of us and the wreckage

of the evening.

Then I move.

I cross the distance between us in three strides and grab Logan by the back of his neck, slamming his face

into the dining table so hard the wood splinters.

He grunts in pain, tries to struggle, but I’m stronger and faster and I’ve been wanting to do this for a week.

I slam him down again.

And again.my

The table cracks and groans under the impact, blood streaming from his nose, from a gash on his forehead, spattering across the white tablecloth in arterial sprays.

Listen carefully,I growl, leaning close to his ear, because I’m only going to say this once.

He wheezes something that might be a curse or a plea, but I don’t care.

C

I know your car was found leaving the premises exactly after Rayana was stabbed. I know you had something to do with that, and I know my door never malfunctions. I know you tried to have the doctor killed before she could testify. I know you erased Ember’s hospital records.

I yank his head back and siam it down again for emphasis.

The only reason you’re still breathing right now is because the council is watching. Because killing you here would cause more problems than it would solve. But the moment we leave this fucking country, the moment I have you somewhere without witnessesI let the silence stretch, let him imagine all the terrible things I’m capable of. I will make a necklace from your spine. I will hang it above my fireplace as a reminder of what happens to men who threaten what’s mine.

CHAPTERA

ACE FROM YOUR SPINE

Logan spits blood onto the ruined tablecloth and laughs.

Actually laughs.

You think I’m afraid of you?he rasps. You think your threats mean anything to me? I just watched them drag away the only person I’ve ever loved. The only person who ever loved me back.

Touching.”

Fuck you.He twists in my grip, managing to turn his head enough to meet my eyes. His face is a mess of blood and bruises, but there’s a feral gleam in his gaze that makes something cold settle in my gut. You think you’ve won? You think this is over? If any harm comes to Gale in that prison any harm at all I will burn everything you hold dear to the ground.”

Is that a threat?

It’s a blood debt.He bares his bloody teeth in something that’s almost a smile. One that will be paid,

starting with Ember.

My hand tightens on his neck, crushing, and he chokes.

I warned her,” he wheezes. Back at the Summit. I told her to play nice and everyone would get out safe. But she didn’t listen. None of listened. And now Gale is gone, and I have nothing left to lose.

You’re going to want to choose your next words very carefully.

Or what? You’ll kill me,

He laughs again, wet and gurgling. Go ahead. Do it. Put me out of my misery. At least then I won’t have to live in a world where Knox fucking Volkov gets a happy ending while I lose

everything.”

I stare at him, this broken, desperate man, and I feel nothing but contempt.

You’re pathetic.

Maybe. His eyes glitter with something dark and knowing. But at least I’m not a murderer.”

I’ve killed plenty of people.

Not like this. His smile widens, blood staining his teeth. Not like Celeste.

The name hits me like a physical blow.

r

My grip loosens involuntarily and Logan takes advantage, twisting partially free, enough to turn and face me properly.

Oh yes,” he says, and there’s savage satisfaction in his voice. I know about that. I know what really happened that night. I know what you did.
