CHAPTER PANDY WAKE UP T
CHAPTER 100: KNOX, WAKE UP!-1
EMBER’S POV
I see him almost too clearly. That same aristocratic stance, that same unimpressed authority, like he’s bored by the bloodshed below. He raises his hand, fingers poised to give a signal.
My hand slams the horn before I can think. The sound blares through the night and Knox’s head snaps toward the car.
He sees me through the windshield. Frowns. Then he turns back to the fight, back to the guards he’s still dealing with, and my stomach drops because he doesn’t understand.
He glanced but he didn’t see them. He thinks I’m just panicking.
He’s going to die and he doesn’t even know it.
Harrison’s hand drops.
I’m out of the car before the thought finishes forming, feet hitting snow, cold air like a slap to the lungs, running toward him as fast as I can.
“KNOX! THE TREES!”
He turns at the sound of my voice. His eyes find me first out of the car, exposed, standing in the open like an idiot – and the terror that floods his face stops my heart. Pure, raw terror.
Then my words register and his gaze snaps up to the treeline, his face draining of what little color is left.
But the fear isn’t for his own life. It was never for his own life.
His eyes snap back to me and something in him breaks – logic, sense, self–preservation, all of it gone in
an instant.
The archers release.
Knox launches toward me in a blink.
Time slows down. I see individual snowflakes hanging in the air. See arrows leaving bows, silver tips catching moonlight, a deadly rain arcing across the clearing toward us.
See Knox’s face twisted with desperate determination as he closes the distance between us faster than anything mortal should be able to move.
He reaches me the same moment the arrows do.
His body wraps around mine arms like iron, chest pressed to my back, pulling me against him as he
takes us both to the ground.
He rolls so his back faces the sky, curling around me completely, shielding me with every inch of himself. My face presses into his chest and I can’t see anything, but Goddess, I can feel everything.
CHAPTER 1UPAND
WAKEUP T
The first anow hits him and his whole body shudders against mine. His breath catches, a sharp hiss
through clenched teeth.
Then another impact. Another
And another.
It’s unending.
I feel each one through the cage of his arms, feel the force traveling through his bones into mine, feel him flinch with every hit but never once loosen his grip.
The arrows keep coming and his breathing gets shorter and something warm starts spreading against my skin, soaking through my dress.
Blood. His blood.
The rain finally stops.
For a moment there’s nothing but the howl of wind and my own heartbeat pounding in my ears. Knox’s arms are still locked around me. His weight is pressing me into the snow.
But… he’s not moving.
I feel the blood before I see it – warm and wet, spreading across my back, pooling in the snow. Too much. Way too much.
The copper smell fills my nose and his weight is getting heavier, like he’s not holding himself up anymore, like all the strength has drained out of him at once.
“Knox?”
