CHAPTER 108: CAN I TRUST YOU?-2
My blood goes cold.
“You can only do that with an official order,” I say quietly.
“Exactly.” Nathaniel turns the tablet toward me, and I see a document on the screen–transfer authorization, stamped and signed. “One that was signed off by a council member.”
My jaw grinds so hard I’m surprised my teeth don’t crack.
“James.”
“Yes” Nathaniel’s voice is grim. “Apparently Elder James and Harrison go way back. They’re both traditionalists with core ideals that despise everything you stand for with Ember. The court case likely favored Gale because of James’s friendship with Harrison – they’ve been pulling strings behind the
scenes this entire time.”
The implications settle over me like a shroud.
“James knew I would chase,” I say slowly, the pieces clicking into place. “He knew I would go after Gale
the moment that van drove off, tracker or not. He set up the archers, the ambush, all of it – to make me
look like a rabid dog attacking a lawful transfer.”
“Yes.” Nathaniel’s expression is hard. “The transfer was never illegal. Harrison could plead self–defense for everything his men did. If you had killed him on that mountain, if you had torn out his throat like you wanted to, you would have handed James exactly what he needed to destroy you. Which is why you need to see that Ember is a liability that she will constantly put you in these positions, constantly force you to choose between her and everything you’ve built. Which is why you need to let her g-”
A scream shatters the air.
High and terrified and coming from the room next door, and every thought in my head evaporates like smoke in a hurricane because I know that voice. I would know that voice anywhere.
Ember.
I’m moving before Nathaniel can finish his sentence, before my body can remind me that it’s still broken and healing and full of poison.
The door splinters under my shoulder and I’m through it, stumbling into another room that’s dim and unfamiliar, my eyes searching desperately for-
CHAPTER IRPCANT TRUST YOUR 3
There
She’s in the bed, tangled in sheets, hair wild around her face, chest heaving with panicked breaths.
Her eyes are wide and unfocused, still caught in whatever nightmare woke her, and when she sees me standing in the doorway she flinches back like she doesn’t recognize me.
Then her vision clears.
“Knox?”
My name in her mouth, broken and scared and hopeful all at once, and something inside me cracks wide
open.
I cross the room in three strides and pull her into my arms so hard the bed frame groans.
She’s shaking, trembling against my chest like a leaf in a storm, and I wrap myself around her like I can physically hold all her broken pieces together.
