CHAPTER 145: TWO HUNGRY LYCANS–1
EMBER’S POV
“Nate, no.” Queenie sounds horrified now, her crying sharper. “We can’t use that. That would destroy them. You know it would.”
“And that is exactly where they need to be.” Nathaniel’s voice drops, almost gentle, which somehow makes it worse. “Apart. Safe. Away from each other before this thing between them becomes something none of us can contain.”
“You can’t decide that for them-”
“Have you forgotten?” The gentleness vanishes. “Have you forgotten the blood I scrubbed out of that floor for weeks? The bodies I had to bury before anyone could find out who-” He stops himself, then takes a breath. “The way Knox looked when he came back to himself. What it cost to keep that night from destroying everything.”
“This is different. Ember isn’t Celeste-‘
“No. She’s worse.” Nathaniel’s voice is flat. Almost hateful. “I saw him on that cliff with Harrison. I watched
him almost tear a man apart with his bare hands, and I saw what was in his eyes. That’s not a man in
control, Queenie. That’s a man on the edge. And Ember is going to be the thing that pushes him over.”
“You don’t know that-
“I spoke to Dr. Langford about her wolf. About what happened in the convoy – the claws that tore apart an
Alpha and the miraculous healing.” He pauses. “Her/wolf isn’t normal. That much I can tell. And not the
usual type of not–normal. There is something I can’t quite place. I’ve been digging through old files and seeing connections I don’t like. There are bloodlines, Queenie. Old ones. Dangerous ones. The kind that attracts every predator in radius – and in ours, two hungry Lycans. And if she’s what I think she is, if they actually bond…”
He doesn’t finish. He doesn’t have to. My heart pounds.

“Wars have started over less,” he says quietly. “And if this thing between them expands – if his wolf latches onto hers the way it’s trying to Goddess help us all. Because what happened with Celeste will look like mercy compared to what’s coming.”
Queenie is sobbing now, the sound muffled like she’s pressing her hands over her mouth.
“I won’t be part of this,” she manages. “I can’t. Maybe if we just talked to them, maybe if we-
A branch snaps under my foot.
I hold my breath, and I dare not move. Maybe they’ll think it was an animal, maybe-
A hand closes over my mouth from behind.
CHAPTER 14 f
Inearly scream. my body jerking on Instinct, but the grip is firm and the voice in my ear is low and familiar.
Unless you want them to find you, stay very still.”
Rafael.
His chest is warm against my back, his arm wrapped around my waist to keep me from bolting. I freeze, listening to Nathaniel’s footsteps crunch closer through the snow.
“Probably a deer,” Queenie says, her voice still shaky. “Or a fox. There’s nothing”
“We should go inside. Continue this somewhere more secure.”
Their footsteps retreat. Then a door opens, closes.
Only then does Rafael release me.
I spin to face him, my pulse still hammering in my throat.
“What the hell are you doing out here?”
