CHAPTER 254-MY RING ON YOUR FINGERS
CHAPTER 251: MY RING ON YOUR FINGERS
KNOX’S POV
I press my lips to her knuckles again because once wasn’t enough.
“So no, I’m not going to stop loving you when life gets easier. I’m going to love you when it’s boring and quiet, and nothing is on fire, and I’m going to love you when you’re annoyed with me because I’ve left my shoes in the hallway AGAIN, and I’m going to love you on Tuesday nights on the couch when neither of us has anything to say and the silence is just silence and not a crisis. I’m going to love you in every version of our life that exists, including the ones where absolutely nothing interesting is happening, and you’re going to get sick of hearing it, and I’m going to say it anyway.”
She doesn’t respond immediately.
Her mouth opens and closes and opens again, and nothing comes out, which is a first for a woman who has had a comeback for everything I’ve thrown at her since the day we met.
Her eyes are filling, and her chin is doing the trembling thing she hates because she thinks it makes her
look weak.
“That’s the most anyone has ever-” She stops, swallows and tries again. “I don’t know what to say to that, Knox. I genuinely don’t have words, and that never happens to me, and I think you broke something in my
brain.”
“Good. Your brain was overthinking everything anyway.”
She laughs, wet and shaky, and presses her forehead against my shoulder for a second before pulling
back abruptly.
“Wait. You leave your shoes in the hallway?”
“I am a king. The hallway is mine. Every inch of that estate is mine.” I let my voice drop, the possessive
thing edge bleeding through the playful tone. “Which means everything in the hallway is also mine. Lcluding you, the second you step foot in it.”
“That is not how hallways work.”
“It is exactly how my hallway works. You will find that out soon enough, because I am putting a ring on your finger the week we get home. Then the hallway is technically half yours, but I am still leaving my
shoes in it.”
The sentence leaves my mouth before my brain can catch it. The silence that instantly floods the car is the loudest, heaviest thing I have ever experienced.
Ember freezes. Her lips part softly. Her eyes go wide in the dark.
And I am sitting behind the wheel of an SUV on a blacked-out Alaskan highway, having just proposed to the absolute love of my life during an argument about shoe storage.

“Did you just-”
“wasn’t supposed to say that yet.”
“Did you just say you’re putting a ring-
“I had a plan.” Panic, hot and completely unfamiliar, surges in my chest. “There was going to be a moment. A perfect moment. I was going to do it at the estate. In the greenhouse, or under the stars. Somewhere with actual romance and atmosphere that wasn’t-”
“Knox.”
“-a freezing car on a pitch-black highway while you are wearing my oversized jacket and hospital socks. We are literally driving to destroy evidence of a massacre. This is objectively the worst, most violently unromantic proposal setting in the history of-”
“KNOX.”
“What?” I snap, my heart hammering against my ribs like a trapped animal.
“Yes.”
The word is incredibly soft, yet it holds enough power to stop my lungs from working.
It kills the rambling, the panic, the desperate spiral to take it back and do it right.
She says it with the quiet, devastating certainty of someone who has known her answer for a very long time.
“Yes?” My voice is completely wrecked.
“Yes, you impossible man. Yes, I will marry you.” She shifts closer, her eyes burning bright in the dim light of the dashboard. “Yes, in this car. Yes, on this highway, in hospital socks, with ash under my nails. Yes, to the hallway, and the shoes, and the boring Tuesdays. Yes to whatever comes with loving you-the politics, the enemies, and the feral gene we are absolutely going to cure. I am not letting anything take you from
me, Knox Volkov. Not a gene. Not a council. Nothing.”
I slam on the brakes and swerve onto the shoulder, shoving the SUV into park. I have to.
My vision is blurring, and the overwhelming, territorial need to have my hands on her right this second is
vibrating in my bones.
I am not going to crash a car thirty seconds after the greatest triumph of my life.
She laughs and cries at the exact same time-a chaotic, beautiful mix I never understood until her.
I bail out of the driver’s seat in a heartbeat. I round the hood, wrench her door open, and drag her straight
out into the freezing Alaskan night.
She gasps as the bitter air hits her, letting out a sharp yelp when her thin hospital socks touch the icy asphalt.

scoop her up instantly. I lift her high against my chest, saving her from the cold, and her legs lock firmly around my waist.
Her arms wrap tight around my neck, pulling her face mere inches from mine.
