CHAPTER 263: HOW BIG IS IT?
EMBER’S POV
I look at Knox, and the look that passes between us is the kind that makes other people uncomfortable.
It is loaded with private language, inside jokes, the shared history of a thousand terrible moments and a
handful of perfect ones.
He rolls his eyes in a way that is so exaggeratedly put-upon that it’s obviously an act, and I blow him a kiss
because I can, because he’s mine, because blowing a kiss to the Lycan King in a hospital room while his
ex-fiancée watches is exactly the kind of petty, delicious power move that I have earned the right to make
–
Knox catches the blown kiss – actually reaches up and closes his fist around the air like he’s grabbing it – and puts it in his jacket pocket.
“For later,” he says.
And then he WINKS at me, the bastard, and the wink is so stupidly charming and so deliberately
over-the-top that Rayana makes a gagging sound from the bed.
“Get OUT,” Rayana says. “You two are revolting, and I’m dying, and I don’t want my last memories to be the
Lycan King catching air kisses in my hospital room.”
“Your hospital room. In my territory. Funded by my medical programme.”
“BYE, Knox.”
He goes. But not before pausing at the door to look at me one more time, and the look he gives me is the
one that isn’t for anyone else, the one that says I am coming back for you, and I am counting the minutes
until I do.
Then he’s gone.
Rayana waits approximately four seconds.
“So,” she says. “How big is his c**k?”
“RAYANA.”
“What? I dated him for three years, and we never had sex because I was a coward, and he was a
gentleman, and I have spent every day since wondering what I missed. I’m dying, Ember. Grant a dying
woman some vicarious thrills.”
“I am not discussing Knox’s- you are UNBELIEVABLE.”
“Your face is red. That means it’s big. I knew it. I KNEW it.” She grabs my hand and pulls me down onto the bed beside her with a strength that contradicts her frail appearance. “Tell me everything. Not about the c**k, although I reserve the right to revisit that topic. Tell me about last night. You two came back to the hospital at three in the morning with wet hair and the energy of two people who just did something they

shouldn’t have and enjoyed every second of it.”
“How do you know what time we came back?”

“My room has a window facing the parking lot, and I don’t sleep anymore because sleep is for people with
functioning organs. I saw him carry you in. In his ARMS, Ember. Bridal-style. Through the front door of a
hospital. With WET HAIR.”
I press my hands to my face because the blush is spreading, and Rayana is looking at me with such delighted intensity, no doubt having the best entertainment available in a hospital wing.
“There was a hot spring,” I admit.
“A HOT SPRING! Don’t tell me you went skinny dipping in this weather!”
“It was my idea.”
“Of course it was your idea. Knox’s idea of romance is brooding attractively near a window. You had to drag that man to fun with your bare hands.” She leans closer. “And?”
“And he proposed.”
The silence that follows is so complete that I can hear the heart monitor in the next room.
“He WHAT?”
“He proposed. In the car. By accident. He was talking about shoes in a hallway, and it just sort of came out, and he panicked and tried to take it back, and I said yes before he finished backpedalling.”
Rayana stares at me. For a solid five seconds, nothing happens on her face, which for Rayana is the equivalent of a system crash.
Then her eyes fill, and her mouth does something complicated, and she grabs both my hands and squeezes them, and the squeeze is fierce despite the thinness of her fingers.
“Good,” she says, and her voice is thick. “Good. That’s – that’s really good, Ember. He deserves that. Oh, goddesss. I’m so proud of him. And you! He deserves someone who says yes to the mess of him and
means it.”

“Are you crying?”
“I’m not crying. I’m having an allergic reaction to joy. It’s a medical condition.” She wipes her eyes with the back of her hand and sniffs. “When did he was there a ring? Tell me there’s a ring.”
“No ring yet. He said he’d get one. Something crazy big and tasteless.”
“That man wouldn’t know tasteful jewellery if it bit him on his ass. I’m helping you pick the ring
Non-negotiable.”
The door opens, and Queenie walks in carrying a bag from the cafeteria.
“I come bearing food that barely qualifies as food,” Queenie announces, then stops when she sees my

face and Rayana’s face and the hand-holding and the general emotional energy of the room. “What happened? Who died? Wait, don’t answer that, bad choice of words given the context.”
“Knox proposed,” Rayana says.
Queenie drops the cafeteria bag.
“HE WHAT?”
I try to bite back my big, ridiculous smile.
“In a car. While discussing shoes.”
“SHOES?”
