< CHAPTER ZARGH OUT
There’s to uther word for it.
She seizes me with something that isn’t hands and she hurls me up out of the dark rotten place, and it hurts – it hurts like being torn loose from something I was rooted into, a wrenching, ripping, full-body
agony.
And I come up out of the trance with a scream already in my throat and the cold floor of the room slamming up under me.
I’m on my side on the floorboards. My whole body is shaking.
There’s a fresh wetness on my face, and when I touch it my fingers come away ted – my nose again, and the corners of my eyes again, the cost of being somewhere I had no business being.
My heart is slamming so hard it hurts, and the sweet-wrong smells thick in my throat, and every alarm own is howling.
And Hale is right there.
She’s crouched a few feet away, watching me, and she did not leave.
She said she would leave the second I was settled, and she did not leave; she stayed, she watched the whole time, and her bright eyes are fixed on me with an intensity that has nothing childlike in it at all.
“Finally, you’re back,” she says softly. “You were gone a long while. Longer than I’ve ever managed.” She tilts her head, and her voice goes gentle and probing and absolutely ravenous. “What did you see, Ember? Down there. In the still place.” A pause. “You saw something, didn’t you. I can tell. You came back bleeding. I’ve never come back bleeding.” Her tongue touches her lip. “What was it? What did you find?”
And every cell in my body recoils.
Sapphire’s words about a rotten core pull goosebumps to my skin, a strange unease that seems amplified the longer I stare at her, at the wide-eyed, psychotic hunger.
She’s holding out a second cup. I didn’t see her bring it.
“Here. Drink this one, it’ll steady you, you’re shaking like a-”
“Whose room is this?”
The question comes out before I’ve decided to ask it, and Hale pauses, the cup still extended, something passing behind her bright eyes.
